Wasn't sure where to put this. If a mod sees fit to move this to The Pub or somewhere else, go for it.

The famously conservative televangelist said on a recent episode of his daily religious talk show “The 700 Club” that putting pot users in jail is costly and counterproductive.

“We’re locking up people that take a couple of puffs of marijuana and the next thing you know, they’ve got 10 years,” Robertson said on the Dec. 16 show. “They’ve got mandatory sentences, and these judges just throw up their hands and say ‘There’s nothing we can do – it’s mandatory sentences.’

“We’ve got to take a look at what we’re considering crimes, and that’s one of them. I mean, I’m not exactly for use of drugs, don’t get me wrong. But I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot and that kind of thing, I mean, it’s costing us a fortune and it’s ruining young people.

“Young people go into prisons, they go in as youths and they come out as hardened criminals, and it’s not a good thing.”

The government needs to heed this advice and decriminalize it.

Maybe this explains some of his off the wall remarks.

as much as i think sentencing for weed is pretty stupid it's pretty ridiculous to argue we are regurally putting recreational smokers in jail for pot.

Maybe not in California. If you check the police blotters where I'm at, there are people being arrested nightly for like an 1/8.

Make it illegal for individuals to sell and distribute, and sell it with a tax on it. That'll create plenty of revenue and probably lessen use.

the costs built in because it's illegal will be gone and I seriously doubt taxes make up that hole. Plus very few people I know smoke just because it's illegal

How do other conservatives feel about legalizing marijuana? Maybe Robertson is on to something

Sure it will. It'll be more expensive, and the thrill of illegality will be gone. It won't be a drastic drop or anything, but I think it will go down some.

I don't think I've ever encountered someone who smokes for the thrill of doing something illegal. Just like alcohol, they do it because it's fun.

Also, I am not sure about it being more expensive. It's already like 60 bucks. If they allow licensed dispensaries to distribute it, it will be mass produced and there will be no risk in selling it. Two major reasons it's as expensive as it is. Supply and demand, and risk of selling it. Nobody is going to risk jail time for peanuts. That will no longer be a problem if it's legal. Price should stay the same or go down.

doubt they get jail time

They get a night to think about what they've done. That's just an 1/8. If it's an ounce here, I believe it's intent to sell. Obviously you'd get more than a night if you're charged with that. That's what he is saying, getting charged with a couple ounces. I don't think you'd get 10 years but nobody wants that on their record. Will just make it harder for them to get back on their feet and find employment. All because they had some bud.

i know some people smoke a lot of weed, but if you have over an ounce my guess is you probably are selling it.

Probably. Some people do buy bigger amounts just because it's cheaper or buy more so they have to risk going out less for it. I agree with you though. A lot of people that buy an ounce don't keep it all for themselves. I don't think I would consider you a dealer if you're buying and selling by the ounce though. Mainly because you'd only be selling it to a couple people and they are probably your friends.

I honestly have never smoked the stuff, but why it is illegal and alcohol is legal amazes me. Most pot smokers I know are the most laid back people in the world.

Legalize and tax it. We need the revenue flow.

This may be the first time I have ever agreed with Pat Robertson.

When Pat invites Willie on the 720 Club set, I'll know he's serious.
