Pate: Nico Could be SEC’s Best Qb by Season’s End

Meyer also revealed a conversation he had with a couple of former college football greats about Iamaleava’s future down the road:

“I went back and watched Tennessee and they have a quarterback that, I called Matt Leinart and Brady Quinn this morning after watching this thing, his name is Nico Iamaleava,” Meyer said. “I’m telling you this now, Mark. And I watched, it’s Tennessee-Chattanooga so they were overmatched, the opponent they played, they were so much better. But this guy, as far as a body type, to stand there athletically and throw the ball, the ball came out like a missile! He was a five-star product coming out of high school. I asked this question, is he a Top 10 pick in the NFL Draft, to Brady and Matt. Obviously, he has another year left. This guy is unbelievable, Mark. I know they had Joe Milton last year but this guy is a monster.”

“And as talented as he’s, he’s an even better teammate and a better leader,” Pope said of Iamaleava after game one. “So that’s a testament to him and the growth that he’s shown since coming on the campus. It makes our group, our camaraderie, it makes the chemistry that much better when those guys love each other and they play hard for one another. So they love playing for Eight Ball (Iamaleava).”

Eight Ball, kind of like that.

Pay no attention to the kangaroo rats, Nico. They're just peddling one game poison. Just go out there game by game and do your thing.

And we may have a very high level defense to pair with him
Maybe...
It would certainly help if Ed Spillman joined the fray at LB

He didn't play against Chattanooga I don't think
Is he injured?

We play a base 4-2-5. We’ve got a 26-year-old dude who’s a beast, two stud sophomores, plus a couple other guys, a sophomore and junior, for depth. And yet with all of the questions in the secondary, the top of your wishlist for the defense is a true freshman linebacker to get more snaps? Why?

Spillman will be very good in a year. If we end up needing him to play meaningful snaps this year, that is a very bad sign. It would take at least one critical injury and some upperclassmen not playing up to par.

Urban has had some great QBs.
None of them were as talented as Nico.

We've seen Nico play 2 full games now, but a lot of us still don't see that ... he's like NEO from the Matrix.
He's a mature Tyler Bray... with the quickness of a Joshua Dobbs. A guy his height isn't supposed to be able to move like that, While being an accurate passer, and cool calm and collected demeanor.

Can you imagine it's 2012 and Tyler Bray is standing in the pocket waiting to throw to Patterson or Hunter, but then just breaks the pocket and rips of 50 yards with his feet???
Everyone in the stadium would have been confused about what their eyes saw!

But that's literally what we have at QB now!

We're talking about two different things.

If you cant recognize our LB room needing to continue to increase their level of physicality then I don't know what to tell you.
Spillman is the dude that can take us from good to very good as unit.

He's not some spare tire....

Pili is just now coming back
Arion Carter on the field still hasn't surpassed Telanders production when they're both available.

Perry did show some improvement for sure, but Ed Spillman is ABSOLUTELY the key to our LBs becoming a force in blitzing and stopping the run

We’ll see if Inge and Banks agree with you.

Again…
We’re talking about two different things.

You’re talking about coaching decisions and I’m talking synergy of a position group 🙄

We’re not even on the same frequency lol.

I agree with your assessment that we need at least one more playmaker in the mix. I liked what I saw against Chattanooga, but we're an injury away from having to rely on an unproven player for significant snaps in the 2 deep.

You're comparing a WLB (A. Carter) to a MLB (Telander) with the bold. I don't know that Carter will surpass Telander in tackles given that difference. Arion Carter was out of position and over pursued against Chattanooga a few times, but there's no doubt he's gonna be a playmaker.

Bvs for some still
Knowing that freshmen/rs freshmen are going to make freshman mistakes isn’t being negative. No matter the raw talent, it takes situational experience. I believe Niko will be one of the best to ever play at UT. I also think he’s going to learn a lot before reaching the greatness some folks are expecting today.

He will be great while in that process… and Nico is not a real freshman he played in 5 games last year… redshirt rule is amazing but this guy is ready to take the nation by storm his make up and heup wont allow him to be complacent… everybody no matter the classification has to continue to learn and grow but Nico has got everything you could want in a Qb with a Qb guru head coach in the helmet with him and a Qb guru OC lol… just enjoy the show…

Yeah, you’re on the frequency of “Let me have a spicy take,” and I’m on the frequency of common sense. Par for the course with you. Oh well. Unlike BOT and some others I’d still rather have you on the board than not.
