Paying Pearl (Merged)

If there's one thing that I think Hamilton can do well, it's dealing with the money. I have faith that he will do what he has to do in order to keep Pearl around.

I think that Pearl likes it here at Tennessee. Fans from other teams think that he'll only be here a couple of years. In my opinion, that's just wishful thinking on their behalf.

Get out and support Coach Pearl and our mighty Vols if you want to keep him here. That's all I have to say.

I was thinking the same thing today. He's having way too much fun. I think that he really appreciates the opportunity to build this program back up and go championship hunting. He's already talking about new facilities amongst other things as well.

He could certainly go somewhere like Kentucky and pick up the tradition where it is, or he could stay at Tennessee and do it his way. I think that he's a do it my way kind of guy.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee officials believe coach Bruce Pearl has already earned the right to have one of the top salaries in the Southeastern Conference.

Athletic director Mike Hamilton, who hired Pearl in March, said Wednesday that officials have started talking about extending Pearl's contract and giving him a raise.

"I think he will be one of the highest paid coaches in the conference," Hamilton said. "Right now he's in the middle of the pack with his salary. If we're going to have a program that aspires to be one of the top three or four programs in the league on a regular, consistent basis that comes at a cost. That's the direction we'll probably need to continue to head."

Pearl replaced Buzz Peterson, who was fired after four mediocre seasons.

The No. 11 Vols (17-3, 8-1) beat Kentucky on Tuesday for only the fourth time ever in Rupp Arena, and they appear to be headed for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001.

Pearl's current contract is for five years through the end of the 2009-2010 season with a total package worth $800,000.

Kentucky's Tubby Smith leads the SEC with annual pay of a little over $2 million while Florida coach Billy Donovan makes about $1.7 million a year. Alabama coach Mark Gottfried signed a new contract in June worth $1 million a year.

Peterson's contract was worth $769,500 a year.

Hamilton didn't say how much the raise would be or whether the new contract would be finished before the end of the season. Officials are "just kicking around ideas," he said.

The new fear among Tennessee fans -- thrilled about the success Pearl has brought -- is that Pearl will leave for a better job. Hamilton said he is asked that at least once a day.

"I can tell you for anybody who has a fear that we're not thinking about it or working on it, that fear is unfounded," Hamilton said.

The team's success also has boosted the athletic department's campaign to build a new practice facility for the men and women in a parking lot beside Thompson-Boling Arena. Construction could begin this summer or fall, Hamilton said.

Luxury suites around the arena are in the works, too. In November, the athletic department had five suites promised to donors, and now there are 21 spoken for at an initial down payment of $5,000 each. The total is expected to be between 26 and 32 based on the size of the suites.

The earliest they could be completed is in the 2007-08 season.

Pearl is the third-highest paid coach at Tennessee. Football coach Phillip Fulmer makes $2.05 million annually, and Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt is paid $824,500 a year.

Pearl's current contract provides him with a bonus for postseason play. For instance, he would receive $36,000 or 16 percent of his base pay of $225,000, for earning a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The most he could get is 32 percent of his base pay or $72,000 for winning the NCAA championship. Winning the SEC East would pay 20 percent or $45,000.

He would receive only one bonus for the highest finish. The bonuses are not cumulative.

we need to lock him up for 7 years....

not trying to rain on your parade but we signed Pearl to a 4 year deal b4 the '04-'05 season. i'll let you do that math on how long that lasted. Cincinnati could be an intriguing option w/ it not only being in the Big East but Pearl also got along very well w/ Nick Lachey's least favorite person, Nancy Zimpher. Ironically, Pearl and Nancy know each other from their days in Milwaukee. I myself don't think he'll leave since he's getting paid good money and has a good '06 class coming in the fall. but you never know with him too so only time will tell.

Zimpher is de-empasizing athletics. No way she would pay a basketball coach the $1.5-$2 million dollar range imo.

well thanks for answering something i not only didn't ask a question on but even sided with you on. if u check what i said again i said that even though Cincy is an intriguing option i don't believe he'd leave. also, it is hard to listen to what he says about leaving for another school. just b/c he says one thing doesn't mean he'll stand by it. when at Milwaukee he said moving from D2 to D1 was a hard enough transition for him to ask his family to make and he doesn't know if he could do it again. obviously he did QUITE easily moving to Knoxville. he also stressed loyalty and family while at Milwaukee but bolted the first chance he got with a son who was entering his senior year in high school. does that sound like "loyalty" to you? he said he was strongly considering staying at Milwaukee but that was not even a handful of days b4 he signed w/ Hamilton. again, i'm not trying to say he will leave but you can't be surprised if he does at the same time. he'll tell his target audience what they want to hear but doesn't mean he means it. i'm not bitter that he left as i strongly back our new coach but i'm just saying there's no guarantees with him unless he signs a contract saying he will not leave until his contract is done.

You can't compare apples to oranges.

He has better facilities, better conference, better recruiting base, etc…………. That still doesn’t say he will stay, but one of the first thing he said was the facilities at Mil. were in pretty bad shape compared to UT.

I think Mike Hamilton is doing the right thing about athletics in general at the Univesity. In order to make money, you have to spend money. Giving Coach Pearl an attractive contract is saying a major thing about the commitment to athletics at the University. Long gone is the day when you can just dangle the University in front of top notch coaches and expect them to come a running. Just like any other business, its "show me the money".

My personal view, Coach Pearl has done all the things required of him. He deserves a heafty raise in salary. Congratulations Coach Pearl on a job well done.

yeah the facilities were bad but we were also in the process of renovating and expanding our facilities when he left. they just finished last month to the sum of i believe around $40 million. sure it's more than likely not as good as yours or any school in a high-major conference but then again what mid-major school has the same capabilities as high-majors? in the end, Pearl is gonna do what's best for him, not his employer. the only "guaranteed" way he'd stay through the end of his potentially new contract is if you make the buyout ridiculously high or make some other stipulations where leaving will hurt him more than staying.
