Pearl could have kept Coach Benson and picked up Smith or Gordon and could have met TN's immediate needs and perhaps had immediate success but to do so would most likely have caused him to sacrifice the best opportunity he had to build a real future at developing the foundation that would most assuredly make TN a perinnial power. Coach Edgar from UAB, the coach responsible for Anderson's recruiting success, and a former successful head coach who shares Pearls Philosophy of "Press and Pop" basketball would be key to developing a regional pool of talent for TN in Memphis which would be a feeder for TN and Pearls style of play. It is unlikely Benson could do that. Pearl chose the future and it cost him some shine..but tomorrow the sun will rise again and this time it will shine on TN. Tennesseans should be dancing in the rain until it happens and put away the umbrellas. TN BB is going to be great and until it becomes great it's still going to be alot of fun to watch. If Memphis area players are smart, they will get on Pearl's train because it is the new fast track to championship basket ball and the NBA. Lookout Kentucky and Louisville, your old news and Florida you never really were news. The PHOENIX is rising in TENNESSEE!!!

It's comical when David Climer is the voice of reason:

No, Bruce Pearl is the right coach for UT.

It just may not look that way for another year or two.
