Pearl a possible candidate for the Indiana job???

so are you saying that pearl will be able to compete for a national title at UT?????

if so why????

I'm saying he will be able to contend for a NC quicker at IU than UT. Just because UT has had a great season doesn't mean they can contend for a NC. Look at Gonzaga for instance..they've had a solid program for several yrs now..but hasn't broke through to a Final Four yet...its tough...look at all the early exits from the tourney that UF has had the past 5 seasons...all with good talent.

If UF can compete for a national title with Eddie Munster, so can TN under Pearl. I remember the same things being said by others when Munster got the job at UF...

UF has made one good run under BD...thats not contending for a NC annually though...until he can take a team out of the first weekend of the tourney that will be considered a fluke run by many.

Yeah before Munster got there UF was a great hoops tradition. What was I thinking? UF fans should be mad that he doesnt take them to the final four each season with their stellar hoops tradition.
LMAO

Definitely not much tradition at all...even though they did make the Final Four a couple yrs before he arrived. Reputation is made in the post season..not the regular season.

BD had some quality players and several Burger boys the past 5 yrs though and you would expect more than a first rd loss to Manhattan, Ohio, etc with all the talent he had.

Not a bad idea at all to go ahead and lock him up early so he knows he's secure and paid. Villanova just did that with Jay Wright and this helps recruiting alot. I actually prefer Alford over Pearl just because I'd like to see how far Pearl can take this thing at UT and Alford returning home would help keep state (IN) talent inside the state (May, Gardner, Oden, Conley, Gordon, etc.-Basically all the guys Davis didn't get).

I like Pearl and LOVE UT so I don't want to see them seperate, but I still think IU will at least talk to him. However I never said he would accept which I don't think he will. The rumors will fly over this coaching position.
They may talk to BP, but I think the more likely candidates would be Alford, Wittman, maybe even Dakich...

I agree. He has recruited amazingly well. Got unlucky with Kwame Brown and ran into some major ego issue with Walsh and Roberson. The biggest problems have seemed to me to be that these BD-coached teams 1) have lacked size underneath to go against the better teams out there when it comes to NCAA time; 2) lacked another gear when it came time to go to the NCAA; 3) been physically exhausted come NCAA time.

I think nunber one is getting better. With Noah and Horford, Gators match up pretty well with most teams. Not all, mind you, but at least we don't have to keep running our famous five guard offense! LOL. Seriously, the big knock I had for BD was that he did recruit in his own image too much. Threes will get you into the NCAA tournament, but refs let 'em play once you're there and you better be able to grab some boards to have a prayer.

As to number 2 and 3 above ... Well, time will tell.

Pearl is not going to Indiana.....geez......He and Hamilton have been in meetings VERY recently and are wanting to get this thing done to end all this irritating speculation. I will bet a LOT of money that Bruce Pearl is with Tennessee next year.......a LOT. I would imagine Alford will likely be the next coach at IU. Pearl has ties to Iowa because he coached there under Tom Davis, but I seriously doubt Pearl would EVER coach at Iowa while the current Iowa AD is there. He tossed Tom Davis and he and Pearl do not have a very friendly relationship.

Soon....everyone will see this. Coach Pearl will coach at Tennessee next year. I would be absolutely shocked if he doesn't.

I think he can contend for a NC at Tennessee just as soon as he could at IU. Look at where the two teams are right now. Look who Tennessee has coming in next year. Everything is in place for Pearl to make UT a basketball power. Tennessee fans, sit back and enjoy Pearl, he's gonna be here for a while. Don't let all this speculation get you worried. We have a great coach, many will want him......but he is all Vol. Indiana has next to NO chance at getting Pearl.....I promise.

Gotta keep Pearl! Love the passion, energy, spunk, spark & personality he's given UT BB. Greatly needed!

But for THOSE that think he won't leave UT ever....better get real. Obviously, he's no Randy Sanders.

At Indiana Pearl could only ressurect and "one-up" the past...he would never be know as the father of Indiana basketball. At Tennessee, Pearl can establish his own legacy. Pearl is not a follower, he is a trailblazer and at Tennessee he has all the ingredients he needs to establish himself as a legend in the game. I predict that Pearl will become such an institution at Tennessee, that his son will be the next head basketball coach for the VOLS.
Tough to "one-up" Knight's three national titles at IU. Doesn't really matter, as soon as the clock strikes 12 on Iowa's season, Alford heads south to take the job he got into coaching to have.

I don't have a clue what is going to happen but it doesn't make much sense to me to talk about character and loyalty in this situation. It's a job. Was Pearl not under contract at S. Indiana and Wisconsin-Milwaukee when he left?

I agree with HoosierVol in that what is Pearl supposed to say? Can you imagine him telling recruits, players, and fans during the middle of a season that he was going to entertain all offers and the highest bidder will get his services next year? Or course not.

Pearl may very well stay at Tennessee forever, but you have to rember that he has no ties here aside from this past season. He has coached a lot of years in Iowa, Indiana and BC. Those places are surely to be "home" in his mind much more than here.

I don't think Bruce Pearl is going anywhere, but I'll bet if someone is willing to throw a huge pile of cash his way, he might be willing to listen.
A very objective analysis of the situation, Freak. I hope he doesn't jump ship and doubt if he would after only one year but when an Indiania, UCLA, UNC, Kentucky or Duke calls any BB coach would have to Listen.

To really stir things up, what if the rumors about Tubby leaving for the NBA are true? Wouldn't CBP in a blue jacket be everyone's worst nightmare?

Well, I do try to give everyone something to think about.

The other thing you have to remember is that Pearl has spent a lot of years being blackballed after he turned in Illinois. He's got a lot of catching up to do as far as flirting with other jobs.

In theory, I agree. However, Pearl didn't chase every available job while he was winning at UWM.

I'm glad we got Pearl but really what made him pick UT.

I don't think he got much mention before last year did he?

See my previous post. He got stuck in Mid-majorville after his involvement with turning in Illinois to the NCAA.

I'd bet that Mike Davis making his announcement in the middle of the season is going to lead to a rash of coaches getting contract extensions.

Exactly..can't blame them though..but for what BD has done at UF he makes good enough as is..I'd be more worried about him taking the UK job though than the IU. Still, no way UK will fire Tubby for one bad season..just cant see it.

I live in Indiana and Pearl's name has come up. Alford is definitely the #1 choice, just ahead of bringing Bobby back! What I do know about IU is that there athletic department is broke unless Mark Cuban or Mellencamp throw a wad of money their way. The students are being charged an additional surcharge to their tuition to get the athletic department back in the black from buying out other coaches contracts. They gave Davis $800K to leave. Not a lot of money to throw at Pearl. Basically they will ask Alford if he wants the job (a mistake I think personnally but it is their school) and see if he accepts. After that I have no idea what they will do.
