I think the Mens Basketball team will start the season off 9-1, they will pull and upset against either Texas or Ok. State, who else here thinks that will happen?

ETSU win 106-83
Louisiana-Laf. win 83-76
Eastern Kentucky win
Murray State win
Appalachian State win
Texas ???
Oklahoma State ???
Alabama A&M win
Lipscomb win
South Alabama win

I think Coach Pearl will have the boys ready to play against Texas or Okie State, this will be the first real good teams they play, and i cant wait

Geez, I hate to say this, but I am having a really hard time getting accustomed to basketball at this juncture...guess I'll do better once our football season is over Saturday.

What is the weakest thing about this year's squad? Do we have the shooters? Height? Fundamentals?

Or do we have most of what we need to have a really good year?

Easten Kentucky and Murray State are better than you are representing. Appy State isn't terrible either. No shot against Texas, they're a top 5 team. Very little chance against Oklahoma State. If we get through at 7-3, I'm happy. Anything better would be tremendous.

:D We are goin to see a better team this year but 7-3 would be a good record. We have to give Pearl a couple of years to have our team become competitive against all teams.

we have a really good backcourt, but i think our post play will hurt us when we start playing the SEC schools, but with a little luck and alot of heart we might squeak out a pretty good season

Biggest weak spot I see is lack of bench players that can give minutes and not lose momentum. Talk radio and friends here in Oklahoma think Tennessee is a scary team to play and the Vols are respected. I think we can take OSU, but Texas will slam us, I'm afraid.

The post is the "major" concern by far. They'll have to play sound defense and help out down there all they can. They need to make every basket count when they shoot the ball. Missed shots, especially at the free throw line, will hurt this team with the lack of post players.

8-2 would be outstanding. I'd gladly take 7-3 going into conference play. (we also have to play Memphis as a non-conference game during the SEC season; that's probably a loss, also) Given that scenario, the Vols are probably going to have to go 8-8 in the conference to make the NIT; a tall order, seeing as how we're pretty likely to go 0-4 against Kentucky and Florida. Still, not impossible. I agree with OWB completely; Wingate and Patterson HAVE to start knocking down free throws with some regularity for us to be competitive. Watson's a solid foul shooter, not spectacular, but consistent. Lofton and Bradshaw are good, also. Asumnu is painful to watch at the line, sadly.

You only have to be .500 to go to the NIT and Florida is a game that we can win. Just keep the tempo at a fast pace and don't get into foul trouble.

Making the NIT with our current roster would be a very strong achievement for Pearl and this basketball team. I hope fans understand the circumstances Pearl came in under and remain patient once we fall on hard times this year. And yes, we will struggle this year.

We have no depth at all. We basically went with a SEVEN man rotation against ULL last night. Childress and Howell both logged a couple minutes, but really, we played with a seven man rotation. Ouch! Our front line will struggle in half-court sets. They will struggle to score and they will struggle defensively as well. We aren't a great shooting team. We have a couple guys that can shoot the ball, but overall, we're not a very strong shooting team, in my opinion. We are a poor rebounding team and we will struggle from the line all year.

We have to stay patient, guys. I think Pearl is "the guy". I think the future is bright for UT basketball, but it will be a struggle this year. Pearl is a great salesman and motivator. He knows what needs to be done, he knows what he wants done and how to go about getting it done, and he does a good job communicating his message and making people believe in what he is doing. I love some of the "small things" he has done already. I loved hearing about him and his players going out into the concourse area at TBA after the ETSU game and shaking the hands of as many fans as poosible and thanking them for coming out and supporting the team. I love that he went to the students and convinced them to let him take out the seats of the student section inside TBA in hopes to create a more lively atmosphere inside the arena. Simple things, but very smart, in my opinion. I just think the guy "gets it".

I think he has already displayed that he is a tremendous "floor" coach. That is evident by his long-term success over his entire coaching career, regardless of where he has coached at. he has been successful everywhere he has been. And I've already seen significant improvement in the game of several of our guys under Coach Pearl.

Finally, he appears to be a top-notch recruiter. Before coaching a single game, he was able to bring in what many people considered a Top 10 class and the #1 class in the SEC. To do that before coaching a single game and do it at a program that is as down as Tennessee has been is nothing short of amazing, in my opinion.

When you combine those three things, being a terrific salesman/motivator, a top-nothc "floor" coach, and a top-notch recruiter, you have the recipe for success. Just remain patient. its not gonna happen "overnight". We are gonna hit some bumps in the road this year. Eastern Kentucky is certainly capable of beating us this Friday.

No way we make the NCAA Tournament. Again, if we do, Coach Pearl is, without question, the front-runner for National Coach of the Year honors. Again, we have a SEVEN man rotation. NOT GOOD! We're small, our front line players will get pushed around on both ends of the floor in half-court sets, we're not a great shooting team, we're a poor rebounding team, and we're a poor free throw shooting team. I would be amazed if Bruce Pearl somehow got this team to the "Big Dance".

My hope is that fans are patient and for them to remain optimistic about the future and Bruce Pearl once the realization of the season sets in and we begin to really struggle.

After seeing Florida run Wake Forest out of MSG in person, I'm not sure a quick pace would benefit us against UF.

I'll be happy to see them play hard and achieve their full potential, whatever that may be.

I enjoy seeing a motivated, enthusiastic coaching staff which is developing its players.

Living in Austin, I'd love to see us beat texas, but its not going to happen. That would be a huge upset.
