Anybody hear Bruce Pearl on Jim Rome today?

I thought it was pretty telling when Rome asked what Buzz Peterson had left him and Pearl said they were a bunch of good kids with no big problems, but who didn't work hard enough, weren't tough enough and lacked discipline. He also said that Tennessee needed an identity so the fans would have something to actually show up and cheer for and that the identity would be an up tempo, high pressure brand of basketball. Overall a very good interview.

He also said one of the big differences for him was that in Milwaukee he had one beat writer and in Knoxville he has seven. He lamented, "I farted the other day and it made the paper."

Does that mean that Pearl thinks with his mouth open or does he talk with his Butt open?..or maybe it's his brain that farted...LOL..as for the interview. I agree and I have to admire him for being so open and frank with his impressions of the team. They should be alot of fun to watch next year.

Thanks for the interview recap.

I like what I hear - A man with confidence and a plan.

Mike Anderson is the same way here at UAB. Everytime he talks, you can tell he's in control and has a plan. I've been very pleased with the results.

Pearl sounds to me like he can handle the media just fine and sounds like there will be lots of wind sprints in the men's b-ball team's future

I heard it too and I was pleasantly surprised. He sounded like a really likeable straight forward guy who won't ever be outworked. He actually reminds me of Fulmer in those qualities, but with much more enthusiasm.

I laughed when asked about recruiting kids to come to Knoxville away from the big city.... Pearl said that recruiting in Tennessee would be better than up North because right now kids in Detroit are freezing their rears off and it's 75 here in Knoxville and all the beautiful girls are in shorts and skirts already!

As someone mentioned, he also said that he has 7 beat writers insted of 1 and unlike the other guy, a few of them actually knew what they were talking about. A parting gift for any of you that read the article by the Milwaukee beat writer the other day who compared Milwaukee to an "unfavorable" Knoxville.

Rome made a great point after the interview. Pearl has waited too long and been through too much waiting for a big time job to NOT succeed in Knoxville.

And as for the po'd beat writer in Milwaukee . . . If you lived in Milwaukee you'd be pissed too if somebody was leaving Milwaukee and it wasn't you. They haven't had anything to cheer on since Laverne and Shirley got cancelled.

I agree GAVol. The more I think about the situation and the hire, the more I think Pearl is exactly what the program needed.

Plus, getting him on Rome and having him talk about it pays huge dividends in the sporting world. Like him or not, Rome's show can really impact a subject or program publically.

i talked to a former Tennessee vols player yesterday at a basketball game i was playing. I asked him why tennessee basketball hasnt been good in along time. And he broke it down for me. Its a football school. And then the lady vols. As long as the mens team wins 10-15 games they dont care. Something like that. he also said that they wont get anything done until they get the right guy. so i hope Pearl is the right guy.

if they didn't care, Buzz wouldn't of been fired

We are going to have to have patience. Pearl will be the right guy if we give him time. I have no doubt about it. But trying to make a comparison to the women's team will never be fair. How many dominant women's programs are there? 4-5? Look at the parity in the men's game. Much, much more difficult to be great year in and year out because of the talent drain the NBA has become on the younger players.

3 years and this program will be among the tops in the SEC.

I second that. I am going to stand by this man no matter what now. I love his style of play and if the players "buy" into his strategy, we will win.

The only thing holding our program back was our program. What UT fan, student, alum, booster wouldn't just love to have another program in the national spotlight? I think that statement is silly.

Look at the LV volleyball, soccer and softball teams. They are all nationally ranked teams. Someone tell me they are more important than men's basketball. Baseball Vols are in the top 25 this week. Are they more important than men's basketball.

Give this Pearl guy a chance. He seems to be the real deal. It'll take him 2-3 years to bring our team up to a consistently competitive level. Then tell me the men's program isn't important.
