Pearl Signing 6 year contract today.

My only real complaint about Hambone is getting UT in these long-term extensions with coaches that aren't going anywhere (Fulmer).

Perfect. 6 more years of terrible defense...love it...

at least we're making tourneys rather than being a team so bad that it's questionable whether the NIT really wants to invite them just so they can lose a first round NIT game again

If all we want to do is make the tourney then we could pay somebody alot less money to do so...

I'm saying it was a lot worse before he came. He's done a hell of a job turning this team around from sitting in the cellar in the east to winning the division 3 out of 4 years. And from a team that didn't even sniff the tournament to one that makes it to the 2nd round each year. It's not big basketball school fantastic, but it's much better than what it was.

And the big contract numbers and years are really just to discourage other schools from signing him....since we've spent the last 2 years w/ espn talking about how indiana/whoever is going to sign him that offseason.

I didnt think Tanning Salons offered contracts for more than 6 months?

(Just figured I'd beat Hat to the punch for a change.)

Unless his buyout went way up. He was not going to Indiana.

You'd think that we had Pitino, Calipari, or Coach K with the way Hamilton is trying to make sure Pearl stays here forever.

Considering 80% of the fanbase is in the "well he has us better than we used to be crowd and could care less about improvement" it doesn't really surprise me...

Pearl is just the sort of guy UT needed to get its program to the next level. Like some of you said, UT went from being a celler dweller in the east to making the tournament every year. But now its time to sign a bigger guy, a bigger name, who can elevate UT to an elite eight/final four status. If my memory serves me right, Tennessee has never made the final four, so I think its time for them to pull in a big name and try to reach that level.

Totally against long term contracts. Seems as though he would have learned a lesson with signing the last UT football coach with such a lucrative, long term, buy-out contract.Apparently MBA Mike doesn't understand the prinicples of economics.

What did that contract mean besides a lot of cash going into Phillip's pocket?

I agree but some of these fans here are a little off in the mind because they tend to have forgotten or didn't live through all those horrible years where We didn't even get a sniff of the NIT let alone the NCAA tournament...Now We got a coach who gets us to the tournament every year and will improve over time yet people here STILL complain....Hilarious....Pearl is the best coach we have had in many moons and He should be appreciated....Could be worse, look a Florida, Back to back titles and now they had back to back NIT's and will be very very lucky to even get a invite to the NIT this upcoming season.

Yeah haha at this point, I would rather have Bruce Pearl than Billy the Kid from UF

I'm a big Pearl supporter, but I don't think that this season merited any type of contract improvements.

I just knew if he hung around long enough, Hamilton would prove he's a Dickey protege and make me detest him. Congratulations, Mike. You didn't disappoint. Consider my VASF donation cut to the minimum required to maintain my football seats.

Am I reading that we have some "Pearl Hater's?" I know that the Gator's are UT's biggest foe in football and basketball and the Cat's (KY) are there too. Maybe Pearl should have been signed for only 3 rather than 6. Would that be better. I think Bruce has the Vols going in the right direction. How many years did UT not even make it to the NCAA tournament in the last decade before Bruce came along. He also has the Vols playing tougher teams too(i.e Gonzaga, etc). The Zags are a top 20 team and maybe better at times. Bruce could have had us in the final 4 just 2 years ago.Hey, 30-5 in 2007 was fantastic and we beat Memphis who was runner-up in the NCAA tournament.
GO VOLS!

You said that you agree; then went on to say the exact opposite of Cats post. What exactly were you agreeing with?

Dickey protege? You've lost your damn mind. At least he cares for other sports, unlike Dickey. I understand not liking the move, I agree I don't like it, but I don't understand detesting a man who is trying to do what he thinks best (which is probably wrong, but different point) for the program. At least Pearl has some sort of resume.
