Donovan hired him as an assistant per Jeff Goodman.

Per Casey Goldstein...Billy Donovan confirmed at his press conference today that Rob Lanier is accepting a position at Texas and Richard Pitino will be heading back to Louisville. Both coaches appear to be receiving "Coach-in-waiting" type deals that would significantly boost their salaries.

Yep, the minute pelphrey was axed. John and Billy (and their families) have been extremely close for years.

I call bull on the Pitino Jr coach in waiting, it's bogus.

I find it almost impossible to believe that Texas is giving a coach in waiting designation to a guy who went 58-70 as a head coach in the MAAC.

The Pitinos are shrewd and so is Tom Jurich. My guess is that even if they call it a coach in waiting situation, Louisville will have a cheap and easy out. They stood by Richard The Elder during the Karen Sypher stuff and he has privately commented on how much that meant to him. It's why he didn't make a play for St. John's in the offseason. Having the CIW designation makes Richard II more marketable, so that's the benefit to Team Pitino.

Agreed. This is done to help jr. better his resume.

Glad Pelphrey is at Floriduh. His Alfred E. Neuman countenance fits their program perfectly.
