I think we've reached a place where talent wise we can stay on the field with Alabama. I believe that not because we have ascended to that ethereal height that Alabama was sitting at three or four years ago. Their talent level has dropped off enough and ours has risen enough to wear on a neutral field, we would win about 1/3 the times we played them. However, there is still one factor that I believe is going to handicap us from winning tomorrow. Penalties. We kill ourselves every week with holding calls, faults starts, and pass interference calls. I don't so much get upset about the pass interference calls because I would rather give up 15yda than 7 points any day of the week. It just makes me want to puke up a rusty coat hanger every time we get a holding call and find ourselves in second and 20. I truly believe that tomorrow's game is going to be determined by only two factors. One is Alabama's home field advantage. The other is our penalties. We can overcome the home field advantage by silencing the crowd and keeping the game close. But if we start getting our standard four or five false start and holding penalties, this game will get out of hand by halftime.

Definitely has been a problem

I actually think this is huge factor for us winning Saturday. The way we shot ourselves in the foot in Gainesville when we started to get bit of momentum was so frustrating. False starts, holding and DOG’s.

The atmosphere is going to be rowdy. Joe better watch that clock and be on the same page w his lineman. His game sense has proven to be below average to put it kindly.

It is not just about the penalties we get called on us.
It will also be about the penalties that should be called against the other team, but the flag never leaves the zebra's pocket.
I believe everybody deserves grace, but I also think incompetence and bias needs to be rewarded with unemployment.

Almost all else being equal, the more disciplined team is the winning team.

You have to know going in that the refs are going to be keeping a close eye in favor of Bama, and really tighten up the play. Don't give them a reason. But really, if you let the game come down to a situation where a couple of "bad" calls decide the game, then you didn't really do enough to win, anyways.

I gave you a like because for the most part I agree with you!
However, I question whether some comprehend the full repercussions of flags that do not get thrown?
For example, what would have been the impact of the two (legitimate, but missed) face mask penalties had they been called against us in the T A&M game?
First, it is the frustration that eats at the player who knows a penalty should have been called, but wasn't. Then, it is the penalty itself. But also the confidence that the penalty engenders in the other team. The distortion in focus that occurs to the player the flag is thrown on. The distraction on the sidelines to the coaches. The frustration of your team mates. Penalties can have a ginormous affect on the game.

I was playing bb and I was warned to not speak when the referee blew his whistle. When he blew the whistle on me, I raised my hand and said to a one of my own guys, "It was a good call, I fouled him." Ref blew the whistle and T'ed me up.

There were 3 plays where the announcers during the game last week indicated that A&M should have been flagged for PI. One of those was in the end zone. What impact did those have on the game?

My brother was a DB and lined up 15 yards off of his man. He wanted to send him a message that he was going to be there all day.
He started running at the receiver trying to time the snap and deliver a crushing blow just as the ball was snapped.
He did deliver the blow and knocked the receiver for a loop and flat on to the ground. Only problem was it was delivered before the ball was snapped.
The receiver was the top receiver in the state that year, but he did not catch a single pass that day. Maybe he had an off day. But it looked like he was scared the rest of the night, looking for my brother.
Yes, it was a 15 yard unsportsman like penalty that got my brother yanked off the field for a few plays. So, how much did that penalty affect the game that day?

ps Don't be too hard on my brother. He graduated from UT and bleeds orange!

The point I'm trying to make is that if you need/don't need a penalty called one way or the other in order to win, the game was never yours to win in the first place. The best teams win in spite of the flags thrown by refs--they don't need the calls to go their way and will take the refs influence out of the game. Are there going to be moments where a pass interference could be called on a hail mary? Sure. But that's going to be the exception and not the rule.

Here's a good example: the Lions-Chiefs game week 1 Jawaan Taylor was moving early on near every play and it wasn't called. So much so that it gained national attention in the following days. But the Lions didn't let it phase them. They could have whined and cried and said the refs were in it for the Chiefs. Instead, they just won the game. They didn't need the 15+ false starts to be called and walked out with a win despite the lack of calls.

I wonder if we will see Alabama get penalized like they did against A&M or how they get penalized normally?
