I have never worried too much about the sheer number of penalties a team gets as a stat because penalties can be just a sign of playing aggressively (it's the stupid/brainfart type that are the problem) but I saw this tweet earlier and if accurate it looks like a lot of penalties might just be something baked into the Josh Heupel coaching cake.

Yep. Of course Heupel's team's get lots of penalties. It's totally baked in. The man wants to go fast. I like going fast too. Here's what going fast gets us -

Heupel's offensive rankings:

2018 – 522.7 yards per game, 5th nationally in total offense
2019 – 540.5 yards per game, 2nd nationally in total offense
2020 – 568.1 yards per game, 2nd nationally in total offense
2021 – 475.3 yards per game, 7th nationally in total offense
2022 – 525.5 yards per game, 1st nationally in total offense
2023 – 438.1 yards per game, 43rd nationally in total offense

And yeah, sure, 2023, he's down a little. I think we all know why. But take his offensive acumen, mix in our national brand and our resources, and I think we can all see the better days to come - even if we're penalized some along the way.

Do you think we get most of our penalties on the offensive side of the ball? Never seen a breakdown of that anywhere. Would love to.

It’s much easier to accept penalties when you’re scoring 5+ tds a game.

We are witnessing the worst output by a Heupel offense ever. With the exception of the Virginia game and the first half of the Bama game, we all know why. Now penalties kill drives and we can’t score tds and settle for fgs more often than not. It’s led to 2 losses and wouldnt surprise me if there’s at least 2 more coming.

They about have to be right? Seems like false starts, procedures, and holding are murder for this team.
I would think there would be more offensive penalties than defensive penalties on most teams, but I've never seen stats on it. It's an interesting question.
