Ed DeChellis leaves Penn State for head Navy job - ESPN

DeChellis is leaving Penn State, his alma mater, after taking them to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years. The Lions (19-15, 9-9 Big Ten) lost to Temple in the second round.

Say what now?

This is about the weirdest coaching move I've ever seen.

He not only leaves the Big Ten for a military school but leaves his alma mater as well.

As I have stated in other threads, neither Penn State nor Wisconsin have men's basketball programs; therefore, this is a step up for DeChellis.

And Navy does?

I don't think this is a step up. At all...

I just think he feared being fired/not getting a new contract if he had another bad season.

He got an extension after he got Penn State into the tournament this year, but it took a Big Ten Tournament run to earn that bid. IIRC, their top player from that team is graduating.

He probably jumped ship figuring that 2012 was going to be a disaster and that he might well not survive it. The extension was given begrudgingly, and it's not really any job security.

He wouldn't be the first coach who jumped ship right before the Titanic struck an iceberg, went back to a mid-major and won, then landed another big-time job. Ask Dana Altman about that. He's probably still a heel at Kansas State, but he's still a hero at Creighton and he's seen as the savior at Oregon, where he's making $2 million a year.

David Robinson isn't coming back anytime soon but I have to imagine there is a certain amount of pride coaching at a military academy. Maybe he doesn't need the money.

Don devoe had some good teams at navy... The competition is relative. He can succeed there as long as an idiot ad doesn't have unreasonable expectations

This move isn't hard to figure. DeChellis finally realized what everyone else in college basketball knows. Penn State is the worst job in a major conference by a fairly wide margin.

But isn't Navy a bad job in a bad conference?

It looks like they've only finished above .500 twice in the past 10 years and one of those records was 16-14. Most of their seasons appear to be around 8-10 wins.

Read somewhere that DeChellis still being employed at PSU showed just how much they care about MBB

I've never understood that. Pennsylvania is a pretty talent rich state and the Big Ten gets a lot of coverage. I would think the right coach could succeed there.

Don DeVoe showed you can win at Navy. Also, you've got to really stink to get fired there. DeChellis had used up all of his lifelines in State College.

The talent is all in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Those guys generally sign with one of the Big Five, Pitt, or West Virginia, with the superpowers occasionally poaching a Rasheed Wallace. Those guys don't have any interest in going to State College.

And you're seriously basing this on the fact that they played a game in the 30's last year? Wow. Just... wow. You do realize that Wisconsin has 5 more all-time NCAA tournament wins than Tennessee, right? Last I checked, the object of the game is to score more points than your opponent, whether that involves scoring 35 or 105.

I still think with the right coach (AKA a great recruiter) Penn State could be competitive. JMO
