I wish I could say this sort of thing surprised me.

Pentagon Paid for Fake ?Al Qaeda? Videos - The Daily Beast

Did you read the article at all????

They made fake terror videos, The real terrorists would pick them up and the software on the the disks would ping there location using.

"The CDs were set up to use Real Player, a popular media streaming application which connects to the internet to run. Wells explained how the team embedded a code into the CDs which linked to a Google Analytics account, giving a list of IP addresses where the CDs had been played.
The tracking account had a very restricted circulation list, according to Wells: the data went to him, a senior member of the Bell Pottinger management team, and one of the U.S. military commanders.
Wells explained their intelligence value. “If one is looked at in the middle of Baghdad…you know there’s a hit there," he said. "If one, 48 hours or a week later shows up in another part of the world, then that’s the more interesting one, and that’s what they’re looking for more, because that gives you a trail.”
The CDs turned up in some interesting places, Wells recalled, including Iran, Syria, and even America."

This is just like when we fingerprint and get retinal scans for every male who you suspect is a terrorist or insurgent. The scans and prints are uploaded into a system which is linked to DOD, STATE, FBI, CIA INTERPOL, MI6, MI5 so that when said bad guy pops up again doing bad things you can grab him right there.

So they paid a UK PR firm.... Jihadi John was from the UK.... several of the videos from that time-frame looked fake, yet the news and sources confirmed their authenticity. Hmmmm, I bet there's a good conspiracy theory there.

Laughable at first glance, but if it saved American lives, well worth it.

You have to consider there are always tradeoffs with government spending. If this $540M saved 10 or even 50 lives, I'm not sure it's worth it. The opportunity cost of that $540M has to be factored. What if the $540 million would have been used for medical research that saves 200 lives? Then it means we're out the money and 150 lives.

Closer Scrutiny Reveals How Close To State Power Sacha Baron Cohen Really Is

For example, documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that the Department of Defense was involved in the production of the 2009 mockumentary “Brüno,” wherein Baron Cohen plays a flamboyantly gay Austrian reporter traveling the world. In his quest to become more heterosexual, Brüno visits a military base in Alabama. The scenes on the base feel rather staged, with the officers setting him up for a glut of witty one liners.

“Brüno” was also made with the help of the CIA. In an interview with David Letterman in 2009, Baron Cohen casually stated that a CIA contact had arranged some of the scenes in the movies. Baron Cohen’s idea was to interview Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah members and show them images of homosexual sex to get their reaction on camera. The agent in question was John Kiriakou, who became a public figure after he blew the whistle on the agency’s use of torture in Iraq. He is now an author and radio show host.
