SI.com - Writers - Monday Morning QB (cont.) - Monday June 18, 2007 12:07PM

There are approximately 113 million television households in the United States, and the average rating for the NBA Championship Series showed that 6.9 million of them watched the series between Cleveland and San Antonio.

Remember the late-night Monday night opener on ESPN last year between Oakland and San Diego? Awful game. San Diego won, 27-0. It was pretty much over at the half, when the Chargers led 13-0 and the Raiders couldn't get out of their own way on offense. That game -- after a weekend that started with Thursday night football, went into Sunday afternoon football and Sunday night football, and had a Monday nighter before the second game on the West Coast -- started at 10:25 p.m. EST and ended at 1:14 a.m. Tuesday. And it was on cable TV, which gets a lower rating anyway because not every TV household in America is wired for cable.

The Raiders-Chargers debacle was seen by 7.9 million American TV households.

We all know football is king in this country, but if the best the NBA has to offer gets trounced by the worst the NFL has to offer ... well, the NBA is in more than a little trouble.

The finals were horrible this year. I don't think anyone seriously gave the Cavs a chance. I'd be interested to see the numbers for last year's super exciting finals.

i heard this last week on the radio......it was better, but it was only like an average of 7.9......it wasn't great.

this year's finals was the lowest rated NBA finals......EVER.

Maybe next year if we can get 2 equally matched teams in the finals we may have some better ratings.

Yeah, that's why league revenues are through the roof.

There is an endless list of people that have made a ton of money and still suck. The NBA is a certain member of that club. Revenues through the roof yet they can find people smart enough to get people to watch their league.

I'm not real familiar with NBA profits, but if they are doing as well as hat claims, why mess with a good thing? It's a business and if they're making a bundle, they're doing well.

Their profits may be good but I doubt they are sitting around saying - "why don't we see how low we can get our ratings to be for our championship series". Because this will obviously help them make more money. Or I guess maybe they are in that rare group of people that have so much money that they wish to not see their profits increase even more. I mean they had their annointed "King" in the finals and I believe they were the lowest rated finals ever. The Titanic was looking pretty good when it departed.

You're right. I'm sure they're trying to improve there. However, I'm pretty sure they're also spending considerable resources maintaining and improving whatever else is bringing in the majority of their profit.

If Sony has trouble selling radios, but sells tons of TVs, they'll probably work somewhat to improve radio sales, but focus more on cranking out more TVs.

Honestly I don't know what their problem is but I know they have one. I grew up loving to watch the NBA Finals, mainly Bird against Magic. But I can honestly say I do not watch 10 seconds of NBA basketball in a season. I despise it and root for its failure. I have to say I loved the ratings it got this year.

I guess because I dislike it so much. I root for the MLS to fail as well. I guess because I find each of them so uninteresting. Take this in context, I am not actually sitting around sending prayers to God for their failure. I just take delight in seeing them pull ratings like they just got.

I'm probably even less interested in NHL than you are in the NBA, but I don't really want it to fold. In fact, I'd prefer it stay alive. What caused you to despise the NBA, when you used to like it?

You know that is the weird thing. I don't know and I bet their are a lot of fans they have lost that feel the same way. I love college basketball so it is not a disinterest in basketball. I heard Rick Barry on ESPN this morning and he was ripping the Cavaliers head coach for not teaching LeBron anything. He basically said they just throw him out there and tell him to rely on his talent, he kind of accused the whole NBA of this. I don't watch the NBA anymore so I cannot say if this is right or not. But my perception from when I started losing interest is that the game and officiating is sloppy.

Let's all keep in mind that the Chargers-Raiders game was equally as horrible, and was in the regular season, and was on cable, yet more folks tuned in. I disagree with King when he says "but if the best the NBA has to offer gets trounced by the worst the NFL has to offer ... well, the NBA is in more than a little trouble." I wouldn't say the NBA is in trouble, this just shows how the NFL, and football as a whole, is right now America's new past time.

Let's say for a second there was no NBA/MLS.

I wonder what kind of talent increase, if any, would occur in the NFL if all the NBA/MLS players chose to play football instead of basketball/soccer when they were kiddies?

those will suffer the next time they renew tv contracts if they can't muster better viewership for their flagship. The day the marketers stop paying the big bills, it's over.

Any drop in domestic TV will be offset by the continued growth in the Chinese and European markets. Stern is going to turn the Beijing Olympics into his own private marketing nirvana.

I watched it all this year. I thought it was by far the most boring finals I've ever seen. I'll still watch it again next year, though. The Heat-Mavericks finals is still pretty fresh in my mind.

It's worth pointing out that the worst possible commissioner in the worst of all possible worlds, Gary Bettman, just got a raise because NHL league revenues are stable and -- hey -- up this year! Pop the champagne! He's destroying the NHL as surely as if he were still actually working for the NBA, and yet they're rewarding him. Bettman and the NHL owners are managing the league like a guy whose personal financial goal was to have the highest possible balance every single day in his checking account. Money -- and markets -- just don't work that way.
