As crazy as it sounds, unwashed jerseys bring a premium in this hobby. On top of the fact that the jersey is in "game condition", it makes photo matching much easier.

I don't know how OP got his jersey, but they sell game used jerseys on NFL.com's auction website. And I've seen Rodgers and Brady jerseys go well into the thousands.

Great question. The answer is no authentication is iron clad. None. Some are definitely better....such as NFL.com....but being an educated collector is best. With the internet and multimedia being so available, photo matching is the best way to authenticate jerseys.
