The Vols will be better but won't win the East
June 7, 2006
Go ahead: Call Phillip Fulmer the "great pumpkin" He doesn't care. Sure, he's ashamed of last year's fall from Rocky Top. But Fulmer's fixing things. Step one: bringing back David Cutcliffe.
It's time to warm up your lungs, Smokey.
SN forecasts a 9-3 record for Tennessee. But we don't see the Vols winning the SEC East. In fact, we have them going 5-3 in the league. That's better than last year's 3-5 league mark, but will the face-painting crowd be satisfied with, say, another Peach or Outback Bowl bid?
What do you think, Smokey?
Woof.
That's what I thought.
The last time we saw this team play on its home field, it lost to Vanderbilt.
VANDERBILT!
You have a few more months to let that sink in if the Commodores' kick to your crotch hasn't already set in.
Pretty sad, huh? I never thought I'd live to see the day the Vols lost at home (or anywhere, for that damn matter) to the Commodores. Heck, I never thought my 5-year old son would live to see the day the Vols EVER lost to the Commodores.
And here's a dirty little secret for you: Tennessee hasn't won the SEC since 1998. It's true. I'd think a program with this much excess would have more success.
Heck, take a gander at Georgia's Mark Richt. In five years, he has won two SEC titles. Fulmer? He's entering his 15th year on the job, and he has only two SEC crowns.
The truth hurts.
But Fulmer doesn't appear to be in any imminent danger of having his white ball cap with the orange "T" on it snatched from his head. In fact, I expect Cutcliffe to fix quarterback Erik Ainge. The rest of the skill-position talent looks good, but the offensive line must jell. And I give defensive coordinator John Chavis the benefit of the doubt when it comes to re-tooling the front seven. The secondary looks read-made for success.
Still, if I was a Vols fans, I'd be getting restless. The glow of that magical 1998 national title season isn't even a faint glimmer. Wanna feel antsier? Georgia is only gonna get better under Richt. Florida is making big noise under Urban Meyer. Oh, and Steve Spurrier has South Carolina thinking big.
Go ahead, you can groan now.
Where's that leave Tennessee? (I'm shrugging my shoulders right now.)
Here's what I think: Fulmer has driven the Vols' bus as far as he can. He needs a big season. But even if the Vols are better than I think and win the East, I don't see them topping Auburn or LSU in the SEC title game.
Eight- or nine-win seasons are great ... at places like Fayetteville, Ark., Oxford, Miss., and Columbia, S.C. But in Knoxville, Tenn., more is expected -- at least once every three to five years.
Such is life way atop Rocky Top.
