Little different format this week, how many Home Runs will Tennessee Hit in the games, more or less than 7.5
8-4 Record
Fewer programs were ravaged by COVID-related schedule interruptions last year than JMU, which managed to play just 28 games and never was able to settle into a rhythm. But most of the key pieces from that squad are back, making this an experienced club with a nice balance of power arms and talented hitters. Of course, no player in the CAA — and maybe no player in college baseball — has more talent than junior center fielder/lefthander Chase DeLauter, a consensus top-10-overall prospect for the 2022 draft and a legitimate candidate to go No. 1. DeLauter has always performed at JMU, and he put his five-tool ability to use with a big summer in the Cape Cod League against premium competition last year. His lefthanded power and ability to hit for average might stand out the most, but DeLauter can also put his big-time arm strength to use in the JMU bullpen, with a 92-93 fastball from a tough low slot. Lefthanded-hitting catcher Travis Reifsnyder (.314/.448/.514), hit machine RF Carson Bell (.346/.386/.513) and toolsy LF Trevon Dabney (.274/.370/.339) lead the veteran supporting cast around DeLauter.
The Dukes also have a number of arms with fastballs in the 90s to headline the pitching staff. RHP Justin Showalter is a dependable ace with good sink on a fastball that touches 93 and a swing-and-miss slider. Lefty Donovan Burke (4-1, 3.00) has the ability to miss bats with a four-pitch mix including a fastball up to 92, and if he can cut down his walk rate a bit he could really shine. Righties CJ Czerwinski and Joe Vogatsky posted ERAs in the 9s last year, but they are intriguing breakout candidates if they can harness fastballs that reach the mid-90s. Likewise expected closer Jacob Steinberg can reach 94 along with a good breaking ball, and key reliever Lilam Grubbs has a 90-93 heater along with three useful secondary pitches. Pitching is the key; if these talented arms can progress, James Madison will be very dangerous.
