New Tennessee men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin said he’s on board with the Pilot Rocky Top League continuing this summer.

“They had a summer league in Springfield (Missouri), and I think it’s a great way for the players to get exposure and interaction with the fans,’’ Martin said. “It breaks the monotony of the guys playing against each other.

“I understand that a lot of former Tennessee players who are playing professionally come back and play in the league and help our guys, and that’s a good thing, too.’’

“Any summer league, Chicago, New York, L.A., they’re all about offense,’’ Martin said. “That’s just the way it’s always been and always will be.

“Here’s the deal: As a coach, you lean on them year around with defensive drills they have to do in practice,’’ he said. “The summer league gives them a chance to let their hair down and have some fun with their basketball. It’s healthy, and it allows them to improve some facets of their game.’’

Man, I hope I'll still be in Knoxville when this goes down. I also hope Scotty will be playing so I can get my jersey autographed. RTL is one of my favorite things about the summer.

The league is basically organized pickup games, but what's wrong with that? The fans get to interact with current players and see former stars play again. It's a combination of pickup basketball and fanfest. It's a great time, and it's free.

My favorite thing about the RTL is seeing the former players come back from Ron Slay to Lofton to CJ... Jon Higgins and Damon Johnson are fun to watch too. Its also cool to see some of our local HS talent like Lester and the Mid-major's like JP Prim play as well. I am sure Scotty loved pairing up with JP Prim as he was his AAU PG. Seeing players like Tony White Jr come back is cool too. Its not the best basketball, but it is good entertainment. Getting to watch a player commit to UT was cool as well. John Fields made his announcement at the RTL
