Very weak schedule. They don't even play a single away game until JANUARY! Yeah that's right... first 14 games aka first 2 months of the season are home games (*Texas was neutral site). No top 25 out of conference games except UT.

JMO, but I think we will pull out a win up there and be undefeated going into SEC play. :crossfingers:

Not that it's a great indicator at this point, but have you looked to see where they rank in the RPI?

They beat Maryland on a neutral site. They're 4th in the RPI and 3rd in the polls. They play 3 more games before we play them. They will be ready. It will take an oustanding effort for us to beat them.

I think it will be a really tall task to go up there and beat them. It definitely has the potential to be a war.

This team somehow finds a way to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Should be a great game. I hope we shock the nation and take them down.

Pitt is at home and has excellent coaching and a very solid team.

They are not weak inside by any means, but I do not think they have faced a team with our skill down low. If we can shut down their guards, get some good threes from Hopson and Tatum and get some good production offensively from Harris and even Williams or Fields we should win a close game in the 60s or 70s.

No they arent good at all. They are one of the most overrated programs in the country. Jamie Dixon and Bruce pearl have been at these schools for the same amount of time and have accomplished almost exactly the same thing. Yet pitt is looked at as a super power. They dont have much talent and havent really done much. They return a mediocre team that lost in the 2nd round last yr. How are they ranked 3rd?

They play in a better conference than we do. The Big East is always a top 2 conference since Dixon has been there.

They have had better players so far.
DeJuan Blair, Sam Young, LeVance Fields...
We hope Hopson and Harris can finish the year with the kind of accolades those guys got.

Also during Buzzball, at Pitt they had the following happen:

Ben Howland was hired as head coach of the Panthers in 1999-2000 and led them to sustained success for 4 seasons. In Howland's second season (2000–01), the Pitt team, led by All-American guard Brandin Knight, advanced to the Big East Tournament championship game and NIT. In Howland's third (2001–02) and fourth (2002–03) seasons, Pitt won back-to-back Big East regular season championships, appeared in back-to-back Big East tournament championship games and won the Big East tournament in 2003. Pitt advanced to consecutive NCAA tournament Sweet Sixteens (2002, 2003). For his success in the 2001-02 season, Howland was named the Big East Coach of the Year, Naismith College Coach of the Year, and won the Henry Iba Award as best college basketball coach as named by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Following the 2003 season, Howland left Pitt for the only job he said he would ever contemplate leaving Pitt for: the head coach position at UCLA.[5]

Despite all of that, I agree that Pitt has not had amazing success as a program like say UNLV, Michigan State, UConn, Duke or Kentucky.

Which one of those guys is still on the team. Under dixon they have advanced exactly 1 total round further in the NCAA tournament than we have uner pearl.

I do not think Dixon is a better coach than Pearl.

I do not think they are a program that is significantly further along than ours.

I do think that there are some fairly legitimate reasons that Pitt is considered slightly ahead of where we are now, and a lot of it has to do with sustained success that goes back a little further, and doing it in a better conference.

Last year they were supposed to be bad, and they were instead good.

I do not think their roster is better than ours. I also do not think they are massively overrated. I think they are probably a top 4 team in the best basketball conference in the country. I think we are one of the 2 best teams in a conference that is at best 3rd and probably more like 4th best in the country.

Non sequitur except that later some people will say Big East, Big Ten, ACC and...
I will not try to place the SEC definitely until January. Lots more bball to be played OOC.
Big 12
Team Conf. W-L Tot. W-L
Iowa St. 0-0 6-0
Kansas 0-0 6-0
Baylor 0-0 5-0
Kansas St. 0-0 6-1
Missouri 0-0 5-1
Oklahoma St. 0-0 5-1
Texas 0-0 5-1
Texas A&M 0-0 5-1
Nebraska 0-0 4-2
Texas Tech 0-0 5-3
Colorado 0-0 3-3
Oklahoma 0-0 3-3

Iowa State has to go to Iowa and Virginia...hahahah. They could be undefeated entering conference play without any top 25 votes.

Non Sequitur, "it does not follow."

I was just thinking about how the conferences are doing relative to one another at this point.

The Big 12 is worse than I thought, although K State has some good statement OOC opportunities ahead and Kansas with Selby should be in the top 5 all year.

So because the big east is the best conference that means Pitt is the 3rd best team in the country?

If you believe that the Big East is the best conference and at this point prior to conference play Pitt is undefeated and is one of the best 4 teams in said conference, they are not massively overrated at number 3.

8 posts in and you are arguing with someone who largely agrees with you.

Do you chant overrated every time UT beats a ranked team?

if they are the 4th best team in the big east, and ranked 3rd in the country, then they are "massively" overrated.

We'd better hit free throws if we are going to beat them. We cannot have a let down at the charity stripe against them.

Villanova 0-0 5-1
St. Johns (N.Y.) 0-0 4-1
West Virginia 0-0 4-1

11 teams there, 8 or 9 probably heading to the NCAAT.

13 Kansas State
14 St. John's
15 Vermont
16 Syracuse

6 in the top 16 of the RPI.

If Pitt loses to us they would still be a top 10 team, we would just move up beyond where they are.

Massively overrated was Virginia Tech.

Pitt is somewhere in the range of 1 through 4 in the Big East. It is hard to know exactly where now. Lots of it has to do with how Zanna progresses.

Saying they are not good at all is kind of funny.

I enjoy debate, and I do not mind reasonable discussion, but when I agree that Pitt is somewhat overrated yet point out lots of reasons that is the case (legitimate reasons based on historical success that creates a perception) it is bizarre that you continue to act like you do not understand.

No im saying they are "massively overrated" maybe not even a top 15 team. And the big east does not look nearly as good this year. If they are in the top 4 with that talent, than it isnt. Why do you think you are the authority on college basketball and that If i disagree with your statement than "i just dont understand" I dont have to post on volnation for the last 3 years to know college basketball.

Maybe just me, but the Big East has been consistently overhyped by pundits. I think we come away with the win, especially if we can hit the three ball like we did yesterday.
