Seems funny to me that Dari, Doreing, and others are saying that defenses will catch up to Heup's offense, but as long as the Gators had WR's like Ike Hilliard, and Reidel Anthony did anyone catch up to the fun and gun? As long as we have players like squirrel and Donte, I'm not too worried. Everyone likes to point out the UGA game; we had WR's streaking down the field open 3 times that Hooker missed. You hit those three, and it's a different ball game. As a side comment; I can't wait to see a 222 pound man returning kickoffs............Cam Seldon!

That take assumes that our offense is some sort of gimmick or cheap trick that can be solved and then easily countered. Incredibly lazy, and dead wrong. It’s an offensive scheme that by design is very hard to defend, even if you understand it inside and out-as long as we have the talent to pull it off. Maybe one more season of kicking ass and putting up basketball scores will shut them up.

Well I'm as big of a Vol fan as anyone, and I'll have to admit that the tempo is a gimmick. It's like a guy on my softball team that would pitch the ball the millisecond the batter stepped into the box, and this past season we had another guy that would fake the pitch multiple times to the same batter, but it was within the rules.......both were on my team too!

I have to disagree, a gimmick is a trick to cover for a lack of substance, or to attract attention to it and away from some flaw. IMHO that doesn’t apply to our offense. Just because we do something differently than most other teams to give our offense an advantage doesn’t qualify as a gimmick in my book.

It’s not like we are the only team that goes with a fast tempo. This is something that’s been done by many teams for about 15 years. We just do it the best. Doing something the best doesn’t make it a gimmick. It just makes you good at execution.

How long did Mike Leach (RIP) coach? How many defenses caught up to his system? The people who say this garbage are just jealous imo.

It’s not a gimmick. It’s a different way to run an offense. Think back to the 80s and 90s in the NFL. It was pretty run centric. Did you see many teams lining up in the shotgun every play or run the pistol? Not really. It was mostly under center, old school football. But the Houston Oilers ran the run and shoot. Was it a gimmick? No. It was just another offensive philosophy to run. There are no gimmick offenses in football.

Your analogy doesn’t work. Two different sports.

Actually it's older than that. I watched a movie called " 12 Mighty Orphans". It's a true story about the founding of the spread offense during the depression in Texas high school football.

If we were an all out air show with complete sellout to the circus passing game with a gambling style of gunslinging QB…then I’d say we might be considered a gimmick offense. But we are completely opposite of that. In fact… we are only as good as our run game (which is very solid). As a long time well respected SEC DC once told me…”football boils down to creating spacing and mismatches”. It seems to me CJH is a genius at creating both.

A single A school was going against a AAA school.
The coaches of the single A school decided a short game favored them.
Here were their decisions:
1) We never want the clock to stop! Never run out of bounds!
2) Take the full amount of clock and snap in the last few seconds.
3) Unstack piles as slow as possible.
Results: in the forth quarter they were tied. Their strategy worked exactly as they designed it. It was a very low scoring game and a very short game.

Is tempo a gimmick??? I acknowledge that the way that tempo is employed MIGHT be a gimmick ... as in your softball application. But it could also be viewed as a tactical strategy. Consider the following:
Tempo ... is a strategic choice - you play at the pace that you believe gives your team an advantage!
... fast tempo takes advantage of our player speed and the opposing teams lack of speed.
... fast tempo causes mismatches because players do not or cannot get back into place. (Think Ole Miss flops.)
... fast tempo causes defensive scheming to be very difficult to communicate from sideline to players
... fast tempo disallows substitutions to rest tired players/teams creating open players and open seams.

Therefore, I propose tempo is not a gimmick!!! You can play at any tempo you choose. There are strategic choices to be made to give your team an advantage.
Playing slow and clock eating 16 play drives keeps the score low and the other teams powerful offense off the field. It gives you a punchers chance against a better team. That is not a gimmick- it is making choices that gives your team the best chance to win.
Playing fast and saving clock says we have a better offense and can outscore you. The more we touch the ball the more we score. Again strategic choice.

I am of the opinion that CJH believes he currently has the best offensive strategy & personnel in the nation. If his defense becomes elite ... look out!

I’m in the burbs of Memphis but I was born and raised about 100 miles east in the middle of nowhere. Troy ….up near Union City? Reelfoot is really nice this time of year. Boyette’s still open? Years ago I almost made myself sick there. Never give me all you can eat fish, chicken, and country ham😂.

Yes Boyette’s is still same as always, same owners. I have family from Georgia be here this weekend and as usual they want to go to Boyette’s. You sure get your moneys worth there.
Troy is 5 miles west of Union City, I grew up mostly there.
A friend owns Blue Bank Resort, best place to stay at the lake if you come up.
GO VOLS!
