2022-23 has a deep roster of very capable players. Maybe the deepest I’ve ever seen at TN. Any of the 12 on scholarship could earn double digit minutes per game. I would have liked to see what they all looked like in the MSU scrimmage. There are a lot of buy games in November and December to sort it out.

I think that JJJ, SV, ORN, ZZ, and Julian Phillips will all average over 20 minutes. I think that Olivier will have a great year. If Phillips matures quickly this team has no limits. A solid alternate PG (or PGs) will really help.

Any of BJE, Key, Aidoo, DJJ, Mashack, or Tobe Awaka could emerge and play 10, 15, or more. I would guess that at least one of the newcomers takes a redshirt.

I think that Uros will play his same role and average 8-12. We haven’t seen if his motor runs like it does for upwards of 20 MPG.

There are so many combinations to throw at opponents to create matchup problems. It will be interesting to see how much #6 through #12 contribute. I was going to say that there’s really not a 6th man, but ZZ could technically fill that role with Key (or Uros with PG by committee) taking the start.

The competition for PT should make this a really talented group. I hope that Barnes can keep everybody happy.

Invariably, feelings will get hurt and players will get disappointed because 200 minutes doesn’t go very far with this roster. It might be the most intriguing season as far as who gets to play how much. I think ZZ will have a great year.

By all accounts DJ & Awaka won’t play much, that trims the rotation to 10 which also includes a ton of versatility with those 10 so don’t see much reason to stretch past that.

I’ll say something like…

James 30
Santi 30
Zeigler 30
Key 25
Phillips 25
Nkahmou 23
Aidoo 12
Plav 12
Mashack 8
BJE 5

I was hoping that Awaka could give us 5 minutes, but overall that looks about right to me.

Hearing ORN has been a bit tentative in his return, and that he hasn’t returned to peak form. Don’t know the reasons why his comeback has been slow, but I tend to think he’s pretty important to our success this year. Apparently Phillips and Plav has been a clunky combo. I’d really like to see ORN getting +\- 25 minutes.

I agree he’s important to our success, leaked reports suggested he was best player in our scrimmage the other day, and he played really well for Finland during FIBA, so that is a bit surprising to hear.

Side note, thoughts on where we stand with Chinyelu & Carr?

Heard the same about the scrimmage, but also heard the lineups are very unequal right now. Phillips/ORN/JJJ is unstoppable. Other groups, not so much. I’m hopeful that ORN’s slow Summer is just caution. He’s important. On Chinyelu, we continue to have the most contact of any team. I think they’re optimistic, but still cautious given their inexperience. Last I heard, he wanted to commit before end of November. I’ve heard nothing on Carr, except that he had a great visit.

Thanks for sharing, not surprising on those 3 given the versatility of those guys…I wouldn’t be surprised if our best 6 are Zeigler/Key/Santi/JJJ/Phillips/Nkahmoua which lends itself to needing to play a lot of small ball in order to utilize those first 5 guys as much as possible.

Honestly, I don't see Barnes going that deep very often. I think he will roll with 8 at most once things get closer to league play.

I think that he will use almost every player. Just not EVERY game. Seems like there will be 7 regulars in every game, then Aidoo and Mashack are TBD, and also unknown participation from 3 freshmen (BJE, Tobe Awaka, and DJJ). It would be great if 1 or 2 of the three would redshirt.

A year ago it appeared that Justin Powell and Quentin Diboundje we’re bound to be major contributors (if not last year, most certainly by now).

Maybe with at least (probably) 4 (SV, Key, JJJ, Phillips) and possibly as many as 6 (Uros and ORN) of the first 7 spots opening up next year, there won’t be a lot of attrition with 8-12. ZZ along with Mashack, Aidoo, DJJ, Awaka, and BJE is a solid group.

Aidoo is going to be getting minutes. He’s too good not to. From last nights scrimmage it looks like BJE and KJJ are possible redshirts.

I agree completely about the RS. Just don't see the minutes for Edwards unless there's an injury to ZZ, Vescovi or Key. You can just see the offensive potential from Aidoo that Plavi can't equal. Don't get me wrong, Plavi has really surprised me with how he's developed. Never did I imagine him contributing like he is now. Really thought he'd be long gone by now, but kudos to him for being a damned good teammate and sticking with it. He's giving all he has and opponents hate his guts which I love. Aidoo brings more skill, however. He will add a low post presence offensively that will make it awfully hard for some teams. He's gained a lot physically by a year in the S&C program.

So far you are golden ... we have 2 - 30 minute per game players!
TN v Gonzaga minutes:

33 Vescovi
30 Zeigler
28 Nkamhoua
27 Key
20 Plavsic
20 Phillips
16 Aidoo
14 Mashack
9 Awaka
2 Edwards
0 JJJ - he was excited to lead cheers on the bench. Did you see the smiles on his face. FIFY
0 DJJ

I was wwwrrrrrooooonnnnnn .... not gonna say it. Just can't say it .... okay. wrong!
I still do not see two 30 minute players per game ... over the course of the season, but I am very okay with being wrong .... mistaken. :^)
I said ...
"And nothing I have seen/heard suggests that ON is back to where he was before injury.
Sorry, but I just do not see ON playing 28 minutes.
Respectfully, I think you are off the mark on Ziegler's minutes .... " I was very, very, very wrong! Team News (current roster) and I am happy for you!

As I said earlier ...
"... I will opt for 27-4. ..." Official predictions thread After last night, .... woooo ....

"Well, I'm in the camp that this ranking (#11) is a little bit low, I would have voted for 8th. (But I am not complaining ... and I do not get a vote ... I'm just a Vol fan.)" Team News (current roster) Well, one night does not make a season ... but I would vote for Top 5 after that performance!

Looks to me like I am clueless on JJJ ... he said, "the most talented team I've been on since I have been here" My response was ..."sounds like 'encouraging' words that a senior leader is suppose to say. Frankly, I am having a hard time taking this literally." Boy, was I wrong. This team is better and smoother and faster on offense than my wildest dreams could conjure up.

Plavsic - 17
Aidoo - 15
James - 28
Mashack - 12
Vescovi - 28
Key - 26

Mashack had a bad game against Gonzaga. Barnes is high on him.
Yeah nowhere did I say anything to the contrary. He worked really hard in the off-season and improved. He will most likely end up playing meaningful minutes later in his career. For this season, he will not average 12 minutes per game. That is all.
