Being talked about. They'd need to lop a dozen games off the season, I think, they really have pushed the calender as far as they can on both ends, weather wise.

Erm... wat.

And baseball needs to do anything it can to increase popularity, cutting games and increasing number of teams in the playoffs would go a long way. Adding another wild card team in each League would be good.

12 of 32 teams already make the playoff....

I agree. If they aren't willing to implement a salary cap, they need to expand the playoffs. 162 games for a field of 8 teams is ridiculous. Especially because half or more are usually the top payrolls.

For those whining about salary caps take a closer look at the playoff team's payroll for the past five years. Smart GM's have found a formula to win on the field with smaller payrolls.

You constantly have teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, Mets or whoever else making the playoffs.

I know you're a Rays fan and they've done a good job. For the most though, their winning formula was being awful and getting a top five pick every year. Eventually that talent added up to build a contender.

I just think alot of people put baseball in this vacuum and assume team management is universal for all the major sports. While a cap works in most sports, you have two main ways of winning in baseball. 1)Free Agents and keeping talent away from competition. 2) The farm system.. You have alot more options and control over young players in MLB, if you lose a FA (type A or B) you get compensatory picks , work in cheap veterans and reliable utility players and you have yourself a competitive team.
I wouldn't have a problem with a cap, i just don't think the system in place right now is as broke as alot make it out to be. Hiring a competent front office and a good scouting staff trumps any overinflated John Lackey deals.

Bob Costas had a great formula for expansion. Add another wildcard team. The two wildcards would play a three game set hosted by team with better record. That round would be Tues-Thur. Winner plays Division champ with best record on Friday. This would put a little bigger gap between best record, division winners and wildcard. IMO, they should cut 3-4 weeks off baseball season. Too long.

Sorry guys, I am an idiot and didn't realize I had wandered into the baseball forum. I now self-banish myself from this sub-forum.

I am more in favor of contracting to maybe 22 teams and having single division leagues than I am expansion. Or even a wild card, for that matter.

I can see merits in both the previous and current playoff structures, but I can see no benefit in expansion.

I think it's fine the way it is. If they do add playoff teams, they better drop some regular season games. If they don't then good lord. I lose interest enough as is, but if they add 2 more weeks to the season forget it.

Lets make it hockey where only 2 teams are left out of the playoffs.

I'm not really for playoff expansion. There are some tweaks needing to be made to the system, but playoff expansion is not one of them.

I'd still contract 2 teams if I could.
