I read a suggestion about how to institute a playoff system for college football without destroying the current bowl system and extending the season for several teams. I wish I could remember where I read it but it's escaped me by now - I'll see if I can find it and post a link for you guys.
The concept: Keep the bowl system for all non-BCS bowls and have a playoff for the 'BCS teams'. Thus the Cotton, Capital One, Peach Bowls, etc... would keep their current relationships and teams - this only affects the BCS bowls. Instead of having 4 bowl games with 4 winners (and two of which MAY both make a claim for the NC this year), you end up with one final National Champion. It may help to use current BCS standings for this. They are:
1. USC 2. Oklahoma 3. Auburn 4. Cal 5. Texas 6. Utah 7. Boise St. 8. Georgia
In this format, the NC game rotates from bowl to bowl each year, I'll use the Orange Bowl for this year and project winners for each round.
Round One - at the Rose Bowl
1. USC vs. 8. Georgia - winner USC
4. Cal vs. 5. Texas - winner Cal
Round One at the Sugar Bowl
2. Oklahoma vs. 7. Boise St. - winner - Oklahoma
3. Auburn vs. 6. Utah - upset winner - Utah
Round Two at the Fiesta Bowl
1. USC vs. Cal - Cal in an upset
2. Oklahoma vs. Utah - Oklahoma
National Championship - Orange Bowl
Cal vs. Oklahoma
This really only extends the season 1 extra game for 4 teams and two extra games for two teams. It allows the non-major bowls to keep their relevance with the new playoff format, and it gives the fans a little bit of what they've been clamoring for for years. I was awfully impressed with the simplicity of the idea. You guys have thoughts on this?
