Movie companies do this all the time. When Transformers came out a movie called Transmorphers (or something like that) came out as well.

All of these are straight to DVD and confuse people into A)buying it B)Renting it.

I use to work at Blockbuster, so I heard complaints all of the time.

Yep. Transmorphers. 1,000,000 BC. A few others I remember seeing that I can't remember the titles of.

My buddy got burned by one. He rented a movie for us to watch at work. He rented "The Day the Earth Stopped" thinking it was "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Yeah, people would complain all the time. I would simply say, "Why are you complaining to me? You're the one who can't read."

That statement never went over very well.

the SyFy movie was one of the worst pieces of science fiction dreck since Keanu Reeves' portrayal of Klaatu.

There is a pretty horrendous War of the Worlds out there too - it's a year or two old and absolutely heinous.

is this the version starring C. Thomas Howell?

yeah, that one really stinks. The classic 50's version has better special effects.

just watched Battle:Los Angeles and aside from some fairly lame dialogue, I thought it was pretty good. Much better than "Skyline" where there was no way to overcome the aliens' technological advantage unless you'd been zapped by their lights enough times it turned your brain red.

Yep you can thank The Asylum, the king of the Mockbuster. They do one for almost every blockbuster that comes out. There's a horrible Sherlock Holmes movie they made the same time the "real" one came available on Netflix Instant. It's almost worth it to watch it for how bad it is.
