This is the most critical hire in the history of Tennessee Football. I am not overstating it, it is simply a fact. Look at Notre Dame
1986-1996 Lou Hotlz goes 100-30-2 (1 National Championship in 1988.
Over the next 13 years (1997-2009) Notre Dame would go 91-67 with only 1 bowl victory and finishing 8 of the 13 seasons unranked. All of this would occur under the watch of 3 coaches from very different backgrounds.
Bob Davie (Homegrown and promoted from within)
Tyrone Willingham (Flashing West Coast Coach)
Charlie Weis (NFL Assistant Coach)
Finally in 2010, Notre Dame hired Brian Kelly. This was a coach who had been proven successful at three different levels amassing a record of 171-57-2. This proven success was just the validation Notre Dame was looking for.
Now, Brian Kelly in only his third year, has Notre Dame ranked number 1 for the first time in two decades.
My point is this, if we simply choose to continue to follow Notre Dames early lead as we have for the last four years, we could experience a continued drought of success for another decade. If we choose to follow their latest lead and hire a coach who has proven successful at multiple stops, we could turn the corner and be back on top with a couple of years.
I would like to forget about names like Chris Peterson who has been very successful at only Boise State. Google the two coaches before him and you will see a trend than scares me.
I would also like to forget about names like Kirby Smart. Some people are great Head Coaches and some are great assistant coaches. I do not want to wager Tennessee future to find out. Want some proof, Google Colorado State.
I would like to instead focus on names that have a proven track record at multiple stops. Names like Jon Gruden who has proven himself at multiple stops in the NFL. Names like Bobby Petrino who has taken two separate college programs to heights they had no achieved in a long time or even ever.
It is too important to simply of with the flavor of the month.
