US lists polar bear as threatened species

WASHINGTON (AP) - Government officials say the Interior Department has decided to protect the polar bear as a threatened species because of global warming.

The officials told The Associated Press the bears are threatened by the decline in Arctic sea ice. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement was to come from Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne. He scheduled a news conference Wednesday.

The action comes a day before a court-imposed deadline on deciding whether the bear should be put under the protection of the federal Endangered Species Act.

The department will cite studies by its own scientists saying the decline in Arctic sea ice could result in two-thirds of the polar bears disappearing by mid-century.

so now, ANY activity that can be attributed to "global warming" is harmful to the polar bear's habitat. Which is pretty much everything.

This is much worse than Kyoto, potentially.

species have been going extinct for millions of years. why do we have to stop natures course?

Polar bears have been found on a tropical island, I saw it on "Lost", if they can live in the tropics global warming can be good then right.:p

Well..we do have to admit that some species go extinct because of our impact....particularly localized species and our encroachment on that area. This polar bear is case is obviously much more extreme, of course. However, some species likely do go extinct as part of nature's course...it doesn't make much sense to stop that..because stopping those extinctions would seem as bad as our impact causing extinctions...just bad in another way.

why let facts get in the way of good global warming hysteria?

Although two polar bear subpopulations (Western Hudson Bay and Southern Beaufort Sea) no longer appear to be viable due to reduction in sea ice habitat, polar bears as a species do not appear to be threatened by extinction in the foreseeable future from either a demographic or an ecological perspective.

Its about time, I mean after all global warming is President Bush's fault. If we had only had Al Gore in office these poor polar bears would be thriving.:whistling:

I'm not exactly the biggest Bush supporter there is, but the man does seemed to get blamed for everything.
