It's nothing but a business now, plain and simple, and this is free agency.

Can Heupel find someone else, or already have someone on hand, that he thinks can do the job?

If the answer is yes, then let him walk. Thank you for your services and good luck at USC or UCLA or Slippery Rock or wherever. If not, you have to hold your nose and pay him.
The contracts need to have protections for the university. Like, if you do not perform at a certain level you don't receive as much compensation.

If the Vols give him what he wants now and he is going through the motions during the upcoming season or decides he wants to sit and ask for more.......then what?

I liked Cam Ward all last season until he quit on his team. Dude just freaking literally quit on his team at half time during Miami's bowl game. I immediately soured on Cam. Couldn't believe that guy just hung up his cleats in front of his teammates, the world on TV with a straight face. What's even worse is that some people thought it was okay and justifiable. When you quit on your own team, you've lost me and I don't care who you are.......

Totally agree MBH this thread should be titled " How to go from potential Icon to Pariah in One Fell Swoop"

And the stupid titans, not learning their lesson from the Vince Young years are going to draft this diva with the #1 pick. It's like the dumb in charge keep getting dumber.

Was reading an article this AM said that Nico leaving would have other repercussions. One of the reasons Mathews was talked into staying was being assured Nico was coming back for this season. So he could also walk with him. Apparently this stuff with Nico was going on back then but just now leaked out.

Let's say you are the decision maker. Would you renegotiate with Nico right now, or move on and let someone else pony up more money?

I understand that he's played one full season as a redshirt freshman. Has he done enough in your mind to earn more at this time? How do you feel about the timing of this during spring camp?

Deport him.

NIL is good and necessary. The transfer portal is the problem.
Exactly. Until there's some stringent rules on transferring, it'll keep happening. NIL gets the blame because that's the $. Transfer portal is a joke. Unrestricted free agency. It's just stupid what they've let it become. Some of these guys have transferred 3-4 times. What a joke.

Control free agency and NIL ain't so bad.

Fair enough. I do like that Heupel seems to have put his foot down and told him to find a new team. But at the same time, I am sure there was some pragmatism there, and confidence in himself as a coach, too. Nico was good, but he wasn't great. Heupel probably thinks he can coach anyone with decent ability to be good, and he probably can. Nico made this a public battle by holding out on his team. Heupel wasn't having that crap anymore than Barry Odom did at UNLV last fall.

A BIG difference between what UT did and what Barry Odom and UNLV did is glaring and missing from your post. UT must have actually got the checks cut and money delivered. Barry Odom & UNLV made financial commitments to a kid, had him play in a couple of games, and never did cut the check. The kid walked off and should have imo.

That is what Sluka said. I don't know that I would take his word as gospel.

To me, the most damning thing about Odom in that whole incident is that Hajj-Malik Williams is actually a better quarterback. I knew that before the season started, how didn't he?
