After trying to sort thru the merged thread to see everyone's opinion, I pose this question as a poll:

Given that the culture of Penn State was a "football first atmosphere" (per NCAA ruling), but that the entirety of this problem was brought about by 4 or 5 people (administration and coaches) and that the problems had nothing to do with players, ball boys, maintenance, or ground crew, or whatever, should the NCAA have been involved with this at all?

I've seen solid arguments for both, but I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's thoughts in a more organized way.

Personally, I think that the NCAA did what they needed to do. IMO, this was a criminal conspiracy, and I feel like if the appropriate measures were taken beforehand, then Paterno, Sandusky, and the administrators involved would have been removed from their posts and things would have been different from then on, and several children would never have had to deal with what happened. Therefore, allowing the program to continue as it did simply promoted an atmosphere of "if no one knows, it never happened." You can't just let "leadership" like that stay in place, which is just what PSU administration did.

Anyway, just wanted everyone's opinions. Try to stay on topic. I know how we (VN as a whole) can get. :peace2:

They should have gotten involved, but not punished the current students.

I like Jay Bilas' take. Assign a lifetime show-cause to all the administrators involved and vacate all the wins during those years. I'm also OK with the fine.

Even though I voted for the first option, this is the one part of me that I can't get over. I hate that the current athletes are being punished. But, if it had all been resolved years ago, then the staff in place at the time likely wouldn't have been allowed to stay. Besides, the NCAA did allow the current players to transfer without penalty.

I've been in the "yes" and "no" crowd and I honestly don't know how to feel about it. A part of me feels like that this is a criminal case and goes beyond the NCAA and any attempt to hand out punishment looks like an obvious attempt to please the mob. But on the other hand, something needed to be done.

This!

Probably the best way to look at it. I'm okay with the fines and I'm more than okay with the adminstrators involved being removed from any possibilities of receiving a job in similar roles or anything to do with sports but doing something like this punishes the local economy, non revenue sports, and a ton of ppl that had nothing to do with it.
