As part of the transition to a new era in Tennessee football, I was curious to see what direction the coach’s show would go with Butch Jones as head coach. Much to my chagrin, I noticed that their actual "replay" of the game lasted barely six minutes. If you find that difficult to believe, as I did, here is the link to the commercial-free version of the re-broadcast (The Butch Jones Show: Austin Peay - YouTube kickoff occurs at roughly the 7:15 mark and they wrap up the end of the game at the 13:30 mark. The rest of the program, as in shows produced during the Kiffin and Dooley era, was wasted on individual vignettes and conversations with assistant coaches and John Brice of Volquest. The program is entitled "Butch Jones Show" and the bulk of it, in my humble opinion, should feature his analysis and commentary.

For those of us who enjoyed the coach's insights and analysis on a nearly play-by-play basis, the old format was infinitely superior. To illustrate this point, I have provided a link to the Fulmer Show following our 41-14 victory over Alabama in 1995 (see Fulmer Show 1995 Alabama - YouTube). By stark contrast, kickoff begins at roughly the 2:30 mark and the game concludes at about the 30:00 mark. Obviously, you got more nearly a play-by-play rebroadcast, accompanied by far more extensive commentary from the head coach.

My question for Vol Nation is three-fold: (1) Which format do you prefer? (2) I realize that the transition to the new format occurred during Kiffin’s short tenure, but who actually made the decision to go in that direction? (3) Is there a prayer of a chance of convincing the powers-that-be to go back to the old format?

I agree with you. I quit watching 15 minutes into it. Probably should make it a 30 minute program like most others.

While I agree that the film breakdown was short, I enjoy the vignettes and assistant coach segments. Tennessee is exceptional at video production and not playing to that strength would be foolish imo. But maybe future opponents will require more in-depth film breakdown with CBJ that Austin Peay didn't.

i like the old one with Fulmer,of course he has Mr Ward with him too,it would be nice if CBJ would go more into the plays, but it was AP after all, just a glorified practice :) maybe it will get better

I agree that our video production department is exceptionally good at what they do, but 6:15 of film breakdown is embarrassingly close to "fluff" in terms of content. This certainly is no criticism of Butch on the matter. As charismatic as he is, I would think, however flawed it may be, that the powers that-be would realize that this is another great opportunity to more extensively feature Coach Jones as the face of the program. More than anything else, I just wish we had an insider's perspective on why they made such a dramatic change in the focus of the coach's show.

I can't help but think they'll dedicate more time to game highlights when the games are "more interesting". We'll see though. The game footage was very rushed on this week's show.

I sincerely hope that you are correct. However, with 317 yards total offense, 20 first downs, 6 touchdowns on six consecutive possessions, and 42 points, all in the first half, it isn't as though they didn't have enough material to work with.

Still would have been six minutes.

i.e.

CBJ: "Here we called a little draw play, we got solid blocking from our beast line, Neal took it the house. APSU is bad."

I am of course not familiar with the UT coaches show, but I can tell you that over the years the shows for Florida and FSU have both become more, and more, and more about one thing:

Commercials.
