I don't think I've ever seen "lack of control by a coach" cited before. SMU really is the NCAA's crash test dummy. That academic fraud citing is interesting, still waiting to hear on UNC.

ESPN Central Texas interviewed Baylor's AD, Ian McCaw, today. He said this is a new concept (lack of control by coach) by the NCAA that we will be seeing more of in the future. I guess it's supposed to hold coaches more accountable for transgressions..I guess.

Agreed, SMU does seem to be the crash test dummy.

The NCAA just loves hammering SMU don't they. Meanwhile, the UNC issue still hasn't been resolved.
The lack of "control by a coach" is an interesting ruling. I can think of some past situations where this citation could have been applied.

From ponyfans.com basketball forum regarding the 3,100 or so academic violations at UNC:

PonyFans.com ? View topic - UNC HAS 3,100 ACADEMIC VIOLATIONS

[They are next but the NCAA won't be as severe with them as they could be for the same reasons why Syracuse wasn't super severe - the infractions took place for the most part before the "new rules".

Our infraction took place before the "new rules".

Their violations are not a lack of control of the Athletic Dept. They have a lack of control of their whole damn school.

Just about sums it up IMO.
