We have a small 12/12 guest bedroom that is miserably hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. We’ve had insulation and air flow checked and they seem fine.

We are looking to put a small unit in there. Preferably not a window unit, but it can vent out the window if needed. We’ve been quoted $3K and higher on mini-splits so that’s not happening.

Does anyone have suggestions for what portable AC/Heating works well but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?

Through the wall hotel unit would be slightly cheaper than a mini split and maybe easier to install depending on your attitude about modifying the building envelope (I wouldn’t put one in a brick house). Freidrich makes some heat/cool window shakers but it’s not easy to find a dealer and they cost more than it seems like they should. Somebody like Grainger might have them.

It’s a brick house, unfortunately.

What’s a window shaker?

Edit: oh, I see. Like a window unit. The wife wants to avoid those because she doesn’t want the bulky exterior look of one.

If you want silent and cheap perfection, you can actually do that. You need to skillfully modify your ductwork. I don’t usually suggest brilliance as a solution online but that is the free invisible and silent answer. That’s what you expected the system to do already and it should do..

When one of our heat pumps went out a couple of years ago I picked up a portable unit at Home Depot for a few hundred dollars that was able to keep our bedroom and another comfortable. It’s louder than a ceiling fan but not unbearable. It’s currently stored in my shed, I can get the manufacturer and size

We bought a portable unit from Costco (similar to this) once. It worked fine. You may not even need one this big.

How do you vent it? Id like to pick one up so we can have another backup option...last year we went 10 days on gen power after Hurricane Sally...we have a small window unit but with this we can run one in the living room and at night run the portable one in the bedroom if we have another bad storm

I recently purchased a mini split heat pump unit on line for a cabin renovation and did the DIY installation myself. It was $900 for a unit that treated up to 1800 sq ft so you could get a smaller one for your space. We love how quiet it is and it both heats and cools great with surprisingly little power useage. The outside unit comes precharged and the refrigerant lines are compression fitted so no soldering. Need access to a set of gauges and a vacuum pump and you’re good or do all installation and pay a HVAC guy to pull the vacuum. I highly recommend this option.
