But Bates and his brother (Jeremy) both are from Sevierville and their dad played for Doug Dickey and coached for Majors. Jeremy played for Fulmer in 95 as 3rd string QB before transferring to Rice. The family has deep UT ties, even if James played for Spurrier (I assume he wasn't recruited by Chavis & Fulmer).
