This is big because he was formerly at Aquinas and is plugged into South Florida. He's been given high remarks in the past by players and parents for helping them with the recruiting process.

Brent Hubbs confirmed earlier that Rubio is in the running for a position at Tennessee and that Rubio is somewhat acquainted with Eddie Gran.

Orlando Sentinel - Report: UCF football director of operations Steve Rubio is joining Lane Kiffin's staff at Tennessee

FootballScoop.com is reporting UCF is about to lose a key member of its recruiting team.

The Web site reports Steve Rubio, the Knights' director of football operations, is poised to join Lane Kiffin's staff at Tennessee.

The site posted this update Monday: "Our sources tell us that Central Florida director of player personnel, Steve Rubio, is leaving the Golden Knights’ staff to accept a position under Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. Rubio will serve as the recruiting intern."

Despite incorrectly identifying UCF's current mascot, FootballScoop.com is usually a pretty reliable source of information. I have asked UCF for confirmation Rubio accepted a job at Tennessee, and I am awaiting a response.

During the past year, all the recruits I've spoken with have said Rubio has played a key role in helping both them and their parents feel comfortable throughout the recruiting process. With no direct on-the-field coaching responsbilities, Rubio focused heavily on recruiting and brought a ton of energy to his job. It says a lot about Rubio's reputation on the recruiting trail that he was able to land a position with a BCS program.

If it means getting top recruits out of Florida, I say by all means hire him. Sounds like he comes highly recommended, and the staff has been doing their homework on him.

Recruting Intern???? I thought UT's Staff was filled. How much can they pay him??? Has UT had such a position in the past??? He sounds like a quality addition if it's true.

Im just wondering why this position was not already filled if it does exist?

How cool would it be to be the recruiting intern for this staff out of like college or something. I know that it won't ever happen but still. And heck bring this guy in, some more South Florida connections can't hurt us.

I think there is a difference in Coaches and backroom staff. You can only have 9 on the field coaches. But look at browning he is a grad student even though he was a OC a year ago.

I'm all for anything that can help us establish a pipeline in south Florida.

Wow, this would be a great pick up IMO. I can't believe our staff is actually still getting better. I guess any way you can get a leg up in the recruiting game. Go Vols!

Having coached Steve Rubio at St. Thomas Aquinas I can vouch for how tremendous a person this young man is. He is a relentless worker, loyal, dedicated, and responsible beyond his youth.

Great get for Tennessee - he will mesh nicely with the best man in the business, Eddie Gran - there is no better person to learn from and watch work than Coach Gran.

Congratulations, Steve - and congrats UT!!

no one's stepped up to stifle this report. I believe Hubbs said it was just a formality now...essentially a done deal.

Drew Edwards---

Steve Rubio will join Tennessee’s staff as a recruiting intern, likely next week, UT confirmed Wednesday.

Rubio, a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he played football, before attending UCF.
