Former CU standout Hall to visit UT on Wilson Post
According to Cumberland baseball coach Woody Hunt, his 2014 leadoff man Chris Hall is, in a word -- "driven".
"Chris is one of the most goal-oriented, driven human beings I have ever been around," Hunt said.
So it should come as no surprise that the Capital One Academic All-American is planning the next chapter of his academic / athletic career.
It just so happens that those plans do not include continuing to play baseball at Cumberland.
Hall graduated in three years from CU last month with a 3.99 grade-point-average in Accounting and has decided to pursue a Masters degree elsewhere.
While Cumberland offers several Masters programs, Hall will take advantage of an NCAA rule that allows student-athletes who have earned diplomas from one institution, to transfer to another for a postgraduate program not offered at their original school and become eligible immediately.
Thanks to taking a redshirt season three years ago, Hall will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Chris and I have talked about this several times," Coach Hunt said, "this is not a knock against Cumberland. He wants to further his education in his field while at the same time playing Division I baseball.
"If anyone can pull it off, I think Chris is the guy."
Initial reports had the Friendship Christian graduate headed to Nashville to attend Lipscomb University, but following a recent phone call from University of Tennessee baseball coach Dave Serrano, Hall will be visiting Knoxville this weekend.
The Vols wrapped up the 2014 season with a record of 31-23 overall, 12-18 in the Southeastern Conference.
Tennessee, a 3-2 loser to Vanderbilt in the opening round of the SEC tournament, loses leadoff hitter / outfielder Scott Price to graduation.
"I'm excited," Hall said about the visit. UT offers a specialized MBA -- with an emphasis in accounting.
The Lebanon native batted .392 during the just-completed 2014 National Championship season with 11 doubles, three triples, 38 RBIs and 75 runs scored from his leadoff spot.
He also had 42 walks and was hit 20 times while adding 12 stolen bases in 16 attempts.
Hall was the 2013 Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-MSC selection last season as well and was a Second Team NAIA All-American in 2014.
