Now that we have calmed down, here's my post-game thoughts...

The good:

- Rush defense. Our defensive line could have provided a little more pressure on Hackney, but whenever they tried to run, they got swamped. This is very good since pass offense is down in the SEC this year and most teams will be attempting the run.

- Clausen. Great reads, no mistakes. That INT was obviously not his fault, but the WR who dropped it. Some good deep balls.

- Ainge. Seriously. He was making terrible throws but the reads were there. If anybody remembers from last season, the play style was for Ainge to just throw to a certain part of the field and hope a receiver was there. This time he is actually finding the receivers, so there IS improvement in that area.

The bad:

- Secondary. Same ol' same ol' from last season. Allen was impressive today but the rest of the secondary was so-so at best. It worked out okay today but if they play the same way against Florida, then Leak will probably burn us for 350 yards and 3 TD's at least. GOTTA PICK UP THE SPEED AND COMMIT EARLIER!

- QB pressure. We need to apply more. Then again, I think it might have been Hackney. He took some good licks but kept swingin'. Either way, the rest of the QB's in the SEC are wimps and we need to intimidate the crap out of 'em. We have an All-American quality DL, we need them to play like it.

- The future of our offense. It all of a sudden does not look that good any more. I realize Clausen made some good throws, but our WR's were dropping too many passes. Clausen cannot make the deep ball well enough, and screen passes will NOT cut it against tougher teams. All of our RB's were pretty unimpressive today. They need to be more explosive.

Some thoughts to leave on:

- Don't everybody be so down on Ainge. He is still the future QB of Tennessee football. The physical ability didn't go anywhere. We will need him soon to be able to stretch the field and keep up, because as good as Clausen played today, Ainge is still more physically gifted.

- In 2003, Georgia beat UAB by just 3 points and still went on to win the SEC East. So we can still be fine, we just need to improve.

Here's the the problem, most of UAB's throws were in the 8 to 15 yard range which means UT's LBer's were getting lost in space. Chavis was playing the bend don't break defense because he was scare Hackney would run.

well lets just look at today as a wake up call. It means we can bring our c game and still come away with a victory aginst a good team.

My thoughts are that this will not be the Vol team today that will show up in Gville in a couple weeks.

Is it possible Ainge is going to have the soph jinx this season??

UAB did a nice job on the screens to release pressure when the UT DL got some pressure on Hackney.

first of all, even though this game was closer was expected. i seriously doubt we've shown everything weve got. id think fulmer would be saving more serious stuff for florida and lsu. very dissappointed in ainge, but i think he'll bounce back. but in no way does he deserve a start against the gators.

how can u say the reads were there? his 2nd int came from staring down his primary wr. hes playing like garbage.

I think he was making fine reads, his throws were just all over the place. When I watched the replays, I got the distinct impression that he knew what to do, he just didn't execute on it. He still played terrible though, of course.

it doesnt matter if he throws to the right wr if its over his head. its still an incompletion. good, he can throw it 85 yards, too bad it was only a 10 yard slant. ill take 8 yard passes every time if it moves the ball. this isnt the punt, pass, and kick competition.

...first game guys. settle down. i see it as an early wake-up call. i think everyone knows now that we need to play much better in fla. i'm sure we'll be an underdog in that game. wr's do need to pick it up. ainge/clausen....don't really matter to me. rick played better today but eric will produce for us this year. yeah, i agree with the vanilla defense. we'll put a ton of pressure on leak. lots of work to do but we'll get it done.

Same here. But we will also need huge pass plays to help us out against tougher teams, which I'm not sure Clausen can deliver. We play conservative, close games, but if a games close and we lose the lead, we will need a player that is clutch. Clausen is not clutch, Ainge is. That said, I'd still rather have Clausen start. But I'd still like Ainge to see some field time against Florida. If the game is close, we will need to complete some tough passes.

Ainge continued trying to "load up" on his throws, even Fulmer said the defense really fooled him on that last INT.

Ainge's biggest drawback is he doesn't like to use his safety valve.

Something tells me LSU's or Georgia's secondary won't allow that to happen as easily.

Once again, I definitley think Clausen deserves the starting spot. But there are still the dangers of playing him as well. He was only truly effective today throwing screen passes which don't get it done against good defenses.

and against a good defense, ainge would have had 5-7 picks throwin like he did today. hes very lucky. screen passes actually work very good against overly aggressive defenses, much like we will see much of the year.

I don't remember a single screen??

From Rick? He had a few good passes over the middle... He was decent there but most of his throws were short passes out to the sides. Maybe not screens but short ones.

He did dump it to the RBs a lot. And we seem to be in love with that Waggle play to the fullback.

I'm not sure there wasn't supposed to be a receiver in that spot. The problem is; you don't throw when they aren't.

If the receiver missed an asignment it won't go as hard on Ainge when they grade the film.

From my seat, it was a horrible throw.

Good take on it. He really is looking for the long ball, the big play too much.

Right now Clausen is seeing the field a lot better than Erik and that may well be the problem. Clausen is satisfied with taking what the D will give him while Erik is trying to force things to happen.
