Now that we've gone through fall baseball, preseason polls, prognostications, and All American teams are coming out, I thought I'd put together an updated guess on the lineup/depth chart. Let me know your thoughts and if I have anyone on here who has left. Obviously, some of these guys will play multiple positions, but I listed them where they would primarily play, so no one is listed twice (other than Tears at DH). For example, Ensley can/will play outfield, but was referenced as a 1st baseman in the recent D1 Baseball article posted on this board. I tried to list the bullpen in order of who would log the most innings to who would log the least (very much a guess, especially after the first two).

Lineup

C: Jared Dickey/Charlie Taylor/Ryan Miller/Cal Stark
1B: Blake Burke/Hunter Ensley
2B: Christian Moore/Logan Chambers
SS: Maui Ahuna/Austin Jaslove
3B: Zane Denton/Ethan Payne
LF: Griffin Merritt/Dylan Dreiling
CF: Kyle Booker/Reese Chapman/Alex Stanwich
RF: Christian Scott/Colby Backus/Kavares Tears
DH: Logan Chambers/Kavares Tears

Weekend Starters

Chase Dollander-RHP
Chase Burns-RHP
Drew Beam-RHP

Midweek Starter

Zander Sechrist-LHP

Bullpen

Camden Sewell-RHP
Wyatt Evans-LHP
Andrew Lindsey-RHP
Zach Joyce-RHP
Hollis Fanning-RHP
Jake Fitzgibbons-LHP
Bryce Jenkins-RHP
Jacob Bimbi-LHP
Turner Swistak-RHP
<gap>
Hunter Sloop-RHP
Dillon Orr-RHP
Aaron Combs-RHP
Marcus Phillips-RHP

Closers

Kirby Connell-LHP
Seth Halvorsen-RHP

I think Dreilling goes to LF and Merritt in RF. I'm afraid Scott is the odd man out but will get innings just not start. I hope not because I like Christian. Just going on what they did in the fall scrimmages.
I think KT will first DH or Ryan Miller hit it well.
I don't think Havorsen has thrown a full bullpen yet. I'm not sure who all will get innings in the bullpen. I think for sure Sewell, Kirby, and Wyatt. Not sure after that. I'm not sure what they will do with Zander, whether he will stay mid-week starter or go to bullpen and get an inning in mid-weeks. Hoping Zach can come back full speed but don't expect to see him much early. They will walk him in slowly. So I don't know who will get more innings after that.
11 pitchers threw significant innings (30 or more). So we are at 7 with the starters, Sewell, Kirby, Wyatt, and Zander. 4 more spots and it is a toss up who will get those. Of the ones returning none got more than 7 innings. If Zach and Halvy are healthy, you have 2 spots open. 10 guys for 2 spots. I also wonder how many have been told they are getting redshirted already.
We are missing several because I think there were 45ish in fall workouts.

Halvorsen is the most intriguing of all the new faces to me. He put up some decent numbers on the mound on a pretty average Missouri team. Will be interested to see if he can continue his upward trajectory.

Any big bats besides Blake Burke we should be OTL for?

Dickey, Moore and Dreilling.... Really the whole lineup can be hot. I think it has the potential to be better than last year.

I hope that KT gets some play in at DH, 1st or RF. That young man flat mashes the ball. Ryan Miller also impressed me this fall. I'm not sure about his defensive skills, but the bat provided some pop from the left side of the plate. I'm ready for KB to develop some consistency and be that everyday CF. Also, I didn't realize Marcus Phillips was on campus yet..if so, he has the physique to develop into a power arm for us.

This is the kind of post I was hoping to induce by starting this thread. šŸ˜‰

Thanks, preacherman.

Will be interesting for sure. I wouldnā€™t assume bullpen slots are ā€œlocked upā€ by any means. Things will likely evolve as the season progresses. With the pitching talent that came in this fall, several will compete for innings with the returners. Thatā€™s the way it should be, honestly.

And I think, maybe Shawn Scott is in the mix? Coming back from injury?

That's a lot of turnover in the batting lineup but still some good returning pieces.

D1baseball has the starting lineup for UT being.
C Charlie Taylor
1B Blake Burke
2B Christian Moore
3B Zane Denton
SS Maui Ahuna
LF Griffin Merritt
CF Kyle Booker
RF Jared Dickey
SP1 Chase Dollander
SP2 Chase Burns
SP3 Drew Beam
SP4 Zander Sechrist
Closer Andrew Lindsey
I'm sure they know much more than me, but I can't imagine Jared has the arm or athleticism to play RF.

Give me your thought pattern on that. He played LF last year and I would put my more athletic kid in LF over RF. He may not have a traditional RF overpowering arm but I don't know for sure. You don't have to show it as much in LF as RF. I personally think he and Charlie rotate at C and when he is not he plays LF or DH's.

Check major league lineups. There's a reason Marcell Ozuna and Kyle Schwarber play LF and! Mookie Betts and Ronald Acuma play RF

Do you agree with Lindsey as the closer? Anything on Halvorsen?

I don't see Dickey catching anymore, too many in that role. I see DH and backing up in outfield when needed for him. Also, this may surprise you, but I'm wondering if Beam gets pulled away from being a weekend starter and used somewhere else in the rotation. I do see Zander rolling into a weekend pitcher. I'm hearing good things about Halvorsen, healthy and throwing effectively right now albeit bullpens & inter-squads. Lindsey, doesn't throw particularly fast but he is effective. No doubt he will relieve and be given the opportunity to close.

Agree. Taylor will get the shot at being the primary catcher from what Iā€™ve been hearing. Things could change as the season progresses. I also believe Lindsey is in line for the closer role. But again, gotta perform. Plus, with the current pitching talent, donā€™t be surprised if several of the new guys push the returners for innings this season. Still a lot to be determined.

I've held my judgment because I did not go to a scrimmage this fall. I think the answer will be who performs. If Jared hits like he did last year, no way you keep him out of the lineup. Remember, he led the team in BA last spring, even though he was hurt and did not have as many AB's as some but still had 100 and batted 380. If he does that, he will be in the lineup at C, OF, or DH.
The pitching situation will be interesting. I don't see the starting weekend rotation changing. Nobody coming in will beat out those three if they pitch the way they did. But things change when you don't perform. I will reserve judgment until I see the new guys perform. Just remember that you can only use about 9-10 guys pitching. We had 11 get 30 or more innings last year. Some will get hurt, blow up, and some will just not be ready for SEC ball. And then there is Frank Anderson. If you can't throw strikes you do not get on his mound. 3 more weekends. The scrimmages have begun so some will step up and some will play or not play themselves out of a chance.
