Salaries & Contracts

Some people in other threads have inquired about certain coaches current salaries. I found this site and hope it is helpful for anyone who is curious. I know I was surprised at how little some of these coaches are making.

Interesting. There are some good coaches that you would think we could simply double their salary and buy them away from their current job.

Dabo Swinney
David Shaw
Jimbo Fisher
Charlie Strong
Chris Peterson

There's two groups of coaches seemingly:

A. The type that can be bought

B. The type that can't.

The question is....who goes in which group?

The only way to find out is number them top to bottom in order we would like them and start talking money.

Sweet Jesus. Kirk Ferentz, LOL! Talk about highway robbery. I always felt Iowa was a pretty darn good program. They could get a killer coach for that amount.

He's just really underperformed the last 4-5 years. You almost wonder if he is getting burned out.

According to that list I would offer Gundy 4M a year or Petersen 3.3M a year and make them tell me no more than once.

I vote that we triple Chris Peterson's 1.7 million dollar salary and bring him and his 82 and 8 record to Knoxville.

Alright...can't help myself.

1. Saban - at age 60, he's staying at Bama. I mean, they made a stink in statue of him.
2. Mack Brown - Close to retirement. Would be a big name, but Mack ain't what he used to be.
3. Bob Stoops - Best possibility in the top 10 of this list. Stoops could be getting restless at Oklahoma, but then again, he has it made there. The rumors have been nice. We can raise that salary a little, but I think Oklahoma would fight us. He would be good at Tennessee though. If he can recruit people to Oklahoma, he could recruit well at Tennessee.
4. Urban Meyer - ain't leaving Ohio State. Once penalties are over, he will be in the NC game just about every year. I have a lot of respect for him though. Would love to have him.
5. Les Miles - Sorry, but to me, this guy is just a huge idiot who I'm not sure how he got in this position in the first place. I don't want him, nor would we try to get him.
6. Kirk Ferentz - Pass. Can't believe Iowa pays this much, and doesn't expect better results.
7. Gene Chizik - I'd be interested to see if anyone hires him as a HC. Without Malzahn and Newton, he was nothing.
8. Steve Spurrier - He will retire at South Carolina. Not leaving anywhere.
9. Gary Patterson - Would love to have him. But now that TCU is in a better conference, they have a better chance of making it to a National Championship. We can definitely pay him more though. Wouldn't pay him more than $4 mil though.
10. Chip Kelly - would love to have him, but won't happen. Ever.
11. Mike Gundy - Possible that he will be a candidate, but not an interested candidate. Won't leave OK State.
12. Brady Hoke - No thanks. Not really impressed with Michigan. Once Denard is gone, then we'll see who Hoke really is.
13. Lane Kiffin - Hiring him would be like telling the Titanic to back up and take another whack at the iceberg.
14. Mark Richt - No way. Let him keep underperforming at Georgia. I have a feeling Bama makes him look silly tomorrow. The only reason they're where they are is because they played a WEAK schedule.
15. Todd Graham - Yeah, I knew nothing about this guy, and I don't know anything about Arizona State. That says enough for me.
16. Bo Pelini - I would be fine with this hire. Nebraska has been solid. But I don't think he would leave Nebraska. He's set to win the conference about every year.
17. Jimbo Fisher - The ONLY thing that makes me think he would leave FSU is his relationship with Hart. Other than that, he's got a fantastic team and lives in a hotbed for football players.
18. Jeff Tedford - Sorry, but a guy fired from California is not my idea of a home run.
19. Gary Pinkel - We're seeing his "Success" in the SEC. He won't be at Mizzou much longer if he doesn't start adjusting to the Conference. Mizzou looked bad this year.
20. Paul Johnson - No thanks.
21. James Franklin - I would rather castrate myself with a rusted knife.
22. Bret Bielema - Not sure how great he really is. He's still riding off the success of Alvarez it seems. But I could be wrong.
23. Brian Kelly - We could more than double his salary. I would consider him a home run now, but don't think he's gonna leave a team that's about to play for (and lose) a NC. Nor are they gonna let him leave. But if he's a money chaser, we could get him.
24. Dan Mullen - He's done a good job at Miss. State, but I'm not sure he's what we need. Miss. State got high in the rankings, but got exposed really quickly.
25. Mike London - No thanks.
26. Kevin Sumlin - Would love to have him. We missed out. Dang you Hammy. Most we could do is throw money and hope. He'd laugh in our face though. As long as he's got Johnny Football, he's got it made there.
27. Will Muschamp - I don't really want a coach who looks like a penis.
28. Larry Fedora - Honestly, a fantastic hire. The guy wins. Can he recruit? Not sure. But he's had success, and he's got a killer offense. If he had a good DC, he'd be a great hire here.
29. Frank Beamer - He will retire at Virginia Tech. Great coach though.
30. Charlie Weis - In my opinion, a joke as a college football coach. A really fat joke.
31. Steve Sarkisian - Would never leave the Pac-10, but he's a good coach. Not sure he would do well in SEC though.
32. Dana Holgorsen - Would take him. Great offense, needs a DC though. Same as Fedora, though he's more proven.
33. Jim Grobe - Coaches Wake Forest...nuff said.
34. Mike Leach - He is a lawsuit waiting to happen. No way.
35. Bill O'Brien - Amazing what he did at Penn State. Probably NFL is his next move.
36. Tommy Tuberville - I'm very on the fence about Tubbs, but don't feel he's a viable option for us anyways.
37. Art Briles - I wouldn't be okay with this. He will probably wind up at Arky.
38. Bill Snyder - No way. He is K-State all the way.
39. Dabo Swinney - I'm amazed there hasn't been more talk about him. Guy can recruit. If they announced him as coach, honestly, he's not my number 1 pick, but I think if he had a good staff, he'd be alright.
40. Jim Mora - He's done awesome in his first year. Would take him if he wanted to come.

Dooley was next. Other coaches I would like on the list that were paid less than Dooley:

Kyle Whittingham - he is at the point where he should get a shot at a big time program. But I don't think he will be for us.

Mark Dantonio - would be an interesting hire....and I think I'd be okay with it.

Butch Jones - One of the few coaches Dooley beat. Nuff said.

Charlie Strong - I'd take him. Defensive minded coach, would recruit well, SEC experience. It would be alright, but not my first choice.

Al Golden - I'm respecting him more than I did....but no please.

Chris Peterson - ABSOLUTELY. Arguably the best coach in the country. Imagine if he had Tennessee's resources to recruit with. Whoa. Would love him. But he's probably going to Cal if anywhere.

Rich Rodriguez - Would be an interesting hire as well. Interested to see how his offense would work in SEC.

Gus Malzahn - Would take him. Guy knows offense. He is a coach.

To me, nobody else is worth mentioning.

Sorry....I'm bored tonight.

I think Dantonio is a really good foot all coach. His career record could throw you off a bit. He's had to rebuild every program he's been at.

I could agree with that. Dantonio is a good coach. And he's managed to recruit well even to that snow trap Michigan.

Southern Miss
'08 7-6
'09 7-6
'10 8-5
'11 12-2
UNC
'12 8-4

42-23 overall

If you take out his last year at SM then he is the very definition of mediocre. Even including that season he still averages 8-5 as a HC.
Sorry but leading us towards mediocrity is what got Fulmer fired. Hiring Mr. Mediocre is FAR from a fantastic hire.
