Riggs impressive; Fulmer agrees

Gerald Riggs took his first step toward winning the starting tailback job Wednesday afternoon.

Actually, Riggs took about 25 yards worth of steps, breaking off an impressive run up the middle.

"I've been wanting to get a chance out there,'' said Riggs, who missed most all of spring drills with an ankle injury. "Over the summer it's running and lifting, but it's more fun when you're out there playing football.''

Tailback Cedric Houston, who many have penciled in to hold the starting job, had an impressive moment as well. Houston caught a swing pass and showed great quickness in eluding linebacker Jason Mitchell and running for a 9-yard gain.

Riggs, however, has created more of a buzz of late.

UT coach Phillip Fulmer, who because of Riggs' off-the-field issues was once reluctant to discuss the exploits of the former high school star from Chattanooga, took time to praise him Wednesday.

"Riggs made a really nice run,'' Fulmer said without prompting.

As it turned out, words from Fulmer served as Riggs' inspiration heading into this fall.

"All I've been waiting for is the chance,'' Riggs said. "When coach Fulmer said the position was wide open, it made a world of difference to me — my attitude and everything.

"Now everyone knows nothing is in stone.''

The Drill: The Tennessee Drill produced few exciting moments. The match-up between defensive end Parys Haralson and offensive tackle Albert Toeaina was a shocker. Haralson exploded off the ball with a swim move and blew past Toeaina before the 350-pounder came out of his set.

Ellix Wilson, younger brother of former UT receiver Cedric Wilson, had an impressive Tennessee Drill, as did redshirt freshman lineman Steven Jones. Freshman lineman Ramon Foster and freshman linebacker Robert Ayers came to blows after their match up.

I'm starting to wonder if Big Toe is going to be in that starting rotation or not. Let's hope he can get things together. I have heard it's taking him some time to adjust.

Didn't Sears get a lot of playing time last year when we had some injuries?
