Fulmer was talking about Chip Kell who was put at the Fatman table when they were at UT because he weighed 250

Not to start a new topic. But I think the O-line would be more effective if it weighed around 290 lb instead of 320 lb. Just my opinion, but I think they are a little slow, and got beat a lot last year. Well see if they do better this year in pass protection............I remember a few years ago when Elway and the Broncos were winning super bowls with the smallest o-line in the league at around 290 lb. They were pushing people all ove the field and had the best rushing offense in the league.

Charles Mcrae and Antone Davis were right at 300- rest of the line was about averge for the time- Great line, think we led the league in rushing and gave Kelly plenty of time.

Yep your on top of things

UT gave up 17 sacs last year, 3rd fewest in the SEC and gave up the fewest total yards in those sacs
Had 2 - 1,000+ yards rushers
Gained more yards from scrimmage than any other SEC team 2418 and the highest yard per rush avg 4.7
Yep they sure got beat alot

vol67 is right.....the O-Line protected great last year....and what did we have ....two 1,000+ yard rushers....u dont do that without a versatile offensive line.....i dont care how good the back is....17 sacks is good....thats what a new QB like def.

Vol67 since you think you know so much more then everyone else in here explain this to me I went to the stats page over at cnnsi and Tennessee was ranked 32nd last year in rushing offense. Not only was that not first in the sec it was fifth. Behind LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and Arkansas. Read it for yourself here is it where it is. :search:

Ok, I'd try a different site for the stats, not saying the rushing stats are wrong, but check out what it gave me when I asked for "Total Team Offense"

18. Tennessee 85 474 474.00

The Broncos O-Line fit their running system. They ran mostly zone blocking schemes and cut back type plays. Quickness is a must in this type of blocking.

UT did a little bit of this last year, but for the most part we still just line up and drive people backward. I love having a 321 lb. average line. We should be able to pound Riggs in the 4th quarter.

I don't put a lot of stock in the statistics, but they were very good for last year's team. We ran the ball and protected better last year than we have since 2000, Travis Henry's senior year.

Most of the other teams that were ahead of us in rushing in the SEC were almost exclusively running teams (LSU, Arkansas, Alabama), and Auburn had two RB's taken in the first 5 picks of the NFL Draft.

What counts is that we were very effective running the ball. I'd rather be effective and make first downs than pile up gaudy stats. Most of our offensive stats late in the season (against KY, Vandy, A&M) were via the passing game. You can't dominate the statistical rankings in both rushing and passing. Sanders is always preaching balance, which is what we had last year, and that was due in large part to great play by our O-line.

Another look at the aforementioned site shows that we led the SEC in first downs.

Again, I'll take the ability to move the chains and march down the field over rushing yds./game anyday of the week

Balance is always the best way to go. Last year Sanders was finally fairly impressive in the balance of his play calling. Hopefully he has jumped the hurdle from now on and we will be in great shape!

One problem Gen... we also GAVE UP the most first downs. Again, we played one more game than most, but that's dangerous.

Well I'd guess that 75% of those first downs were due to very bad coverage and tackling by a young secondary. Shouldn't happen this year.

That ranking could/should be even higher. We played in more games than either of the two teams ahead of us, and we also passed more than Alabama or Arkansas.

UT gave up 1 sack per 22.1 pass attempts
Ala gave up 1 sack per 16.3 pass attempts
Ark gave up 1 sack per 20.4 pass attempts

Only 1 SEC team attempted more passes in 2004 than UT and that was Florida
