Heard on the way in this morning that Harrell is scheduled for surgery today. Nobody seems to know the extent of Johnson's injury, but reports of trouble moving his arm and future surgery for nerve damage suggest that my "brachial plexus" theory may turn out to be, unfortunately, correct.

Let's all keep these two young men in our thoughts and prayers, even through the excitement of Florida week.

Credible updates are appreciated.

Praying for them.

Doc, what is the brachial plexus theory?

Oh, I just posted after watching the replay on the PF show that looked like his shoulder took a blow from above. That kind of force can strain or tear nerves and blood vessels that run from the neck and chest, through the shoulder, and on to the arm. The nerve bundle is known as the "brachial plexus," and it's the same thing that can be injured during birth if the head is stretched too hard to the side. You may have heard of babies having limited arm movement for a month or so, sometimes needing PT or swaddling? That's a brachial plexus injury, or "Erb's palsy."

This is all speculation, but as news comes out, it has not been very promising.

KD:

Thx for the explanation.

Question:

I had a thoractic cut---I think they cut some of my shoulder nerves?? My shoulder was major pain. So, his shoulder nerves are torn?

From the Tennessean.

UT goes on defense - Nashville, Tennessee - Wednesday, 09/13/06 - Tennessean.com

Chavis was as disturbed as anyone over Air Force's 281 rushing yards last weekend, and he's still struggling emotionally with the season-ending injuries to defensive tackle Justin Harrell and cornerback Inky Johnson. Chavis has seen Johnson in the hospital every day since Johnson's injury.
"It's tough for me to talk about it," said Chavis, his eyes welling with tears. "If you could, I'd like not to talk about it."

I believe he is going to the Mayo Clinic for the nerve surgery later this work. Lets all pray this goes well and is able to make a full recovery. Obviously from Chavis and KD's comments this is a terrible injury.

Gator's barbs have UT wired for SEC game - Nashville, Tennessee - Wednesday, 09/13/06 - Tennessean.com

Johnson remains hospitalized at UT Medical Center. He's expected to be released later this week, and the plan then is for him to go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for surgery to correct nerve damage in his right shoulder.
