I haven’t posted a new thread in awhile, hoping VOLNation will enjoy what I’d characterize as some of my CFB offseason musings before the “talking time” associated with SEC media days next week.

First off, I’ve already admitted to following (but not posting on) the SECRant site. That site is sometimes informative but most of the time somewhat entertaining as it lives up to it’s name… a forum for fans of SEC teams to rant.

One of the latest threads had to do with whether or not Steve Spurrier would have been as successful in this era of NIL, transfer portal, etc. as he was as the HBC of the hated Gators. While I still feel the pain associated with the win/loss record between UT and UF while a student and to this date (including the Spurrier-led Blue Devils who beat us at home in 1988), I instead just recognize that this East Tennessee athlete would have been a VOL player (and perhaps a coach) for our team… just like Johnny Majors who decided to return to his Alma Mater after winning a National Championship at Pitt (and even Phil Fulmer taking up the mantle to coach his Alma Mater when offered the opportunity). For below, my musing is simply that while I may wish that history would have made the native son of Tennessee (Spurrier) a VOL vice Gator, I’m guessing he’d find success in the present era as he did in the 80s and 90s.

While not on SEC Rant, I came across an interview with Eli Drinkwitz (below). While I personally don’t have any real beef with Mizzou or their fans (I have a good friend that is a big Mizzou fan which I’ve had a standing bet with… whosever team looses on the gridiron, they have to wear the victors colors/jersey).

As I had the misfortune last fall to wear Mizzou’s colors (think Vandy), I was intrigued a bit about the post-game reporting that their coach’s comment to Josh was “we stand on business” which both didn’t make much sense and/or came across to me the wrong way. I just came across this interview with Eli that I thought was really good (go to the 37:20 mark for the motivation for post-game comment… honestly I was impressed by the whole interview). I certainly can’t readily come to defense of our other conference opponents, especially UTjr fans who seemingly think they own our UT brand and conference supremacy.

Worth the listen--the whole interview. The interviewer isn't polished, but he's real. Thank you for posting, VOL89grad!

I often wonder how many fans love rooting for the Vols, and how many people love feeling free to hate on everyone else.

If you're a Drinkwitz hater, and need that hate to enjoy the football season... well, don't watch this interview. He's a good coach, just like Heupel is a good coach, and for many of the same reasons. As just a man, he's got a lot of admirable traits.

But you know as well as I do that hating damages our own health, and doesn't improve our relationships. It's just as satisfying to beat a worthy foe as it is to beat some made up some caricature.

I promise you, college football is much more enjoyable when viewed in reality than when viewed through the lens of WWF caricatures. Even as fans, we can learn some things about real life from sports, if we're willing.

The truth of the real world is, there are people/institutions out there who really do want to do you harm, want to deprive you or your kids of opportunities, want to take your land, want to empty your bank account. I wonder if we don't waste a lot of animosity on pretend-villains when we ought to focus those emotions on the people who deserve it--who are actual threats.

It's more convenient to tell the bad guys by what color they wear on Saturday. The guys who can actually do us harm are harder to spot.

[Just to clarify, given recent events, I'm not talking about political parties or elected officials.]

I watched it and Eli drinkwitz comes across a smarmy little shît and a fake. Not sure where you guys get this “admirable qualities” stuff from.

Hating other schools doesn’t take away from the hatred I have for the guy missing part of an ear or his opponent Mr. Alzheimer’s

Before last season Tigers were 15-19 overall under Drink and we had outscored them 128-48 in the last two games, not sure what they were standing on then. Maybe those butt whippings by us help them find their manhood. They had a great season last year but was it a turn around season for them or the proverbial blind hog finds an acorn season? 🤔
