This is a very interesting read.

Scrooge-like predictions for the New Year - Reason Magazine

The United States and California in particular are continuing down a dangerous path where more decisions about almost everything in life are made by government officials rather than by individual citizens. That’s a fancy way of saying that we are losing our freedoms, slowly but surely. Maybe it’s not so slowly, but it is surely, and the intrusions are coming at every level of government.
...
Economic rebound will delay reform:
...
Republicans will chase away small-government voters:
...
Freedom won’t make the national agenda.
...
War on Terror will drone on
...
Civil libertarians will wander in the wilderness
...
Parties will major in the minors.
...
Expect a full-on California tax push

Its worth reading the article to see his comments on each prediction. The article isn't very long.

My predictions for the upcoming year:

GOP nominates Romney, then loses to Obama. Why? Romney makes the GOP establishment happy, the media likes him more than any of the others, he won't self-destruct. Then, no one gives a crap about him. The hardcore GOPers show up to vote for him but no one else will and Obama wins in an election with the lowest voter turnout (by percentage) of all time.

The economy will bounce back enough that the unemployment rate falls below 8%. Why? Our economy is too resilient to be held down forever. People are learning to work within the new constraints. Insanely long unemployment bennys will finally start to run out and people will actually go out and get jobs even if they aren't what they really want.

Congress will fail to pass a budget, again. Why? Politics have become so important that they no longer feel the need to maintain the pretense that they are trying to make the system work. The whores in congress will continue to try and make the budget and the tax laws a way to buy votes and favors, while the few with principles refuse to cooperate with the continuing rape of the taxpayers.

Any predictions from the rest of ya?

Agree with this list. The state/local government debt crisis could keep number one from happening. Number two is repulsive; has been for the last couple of cycles.

Agree with everything but the last couple of cycles

I'd say all are very likely except 5. It may happen, but I doubt it.

I highly doubt he backs down because of pressure from the GOP. His whole career has been spent not giving a damn about his peers.
