If your expenses went down then it's because you are leaving out some variables i.e. you no longer have to help with college. While your overall expenses may have gone down the expenses you pay for today vs two years ago would not have unless you are leaving out other variables. Period. No dispute.

You’ve already stated the drivers on expenses have changed as your children have moved out. I believe your employment changed also and you’re likely double dipping now on retirement plus some other work. Thus your net expenses vs gross income was already going to be more favorable. In fact you would have been better off without the idiot in chiefs added price increases. Yes this was your first explanation but your comparison case was stillborn from the start. Anyone who refinanced between 2020 and 2022 for a lower interest rate saw their mortgage insurance expense go down.

The right wing narrative that the economic issues being faced today are a direct result of Biden's policies and that everyone is suffering and worse off is nothing more than propaganda. I use to think people were smart enough to see that.
