When Bruce Pearl took over the men’s basketball program at Tennessee in March, he hoped to make an immediate impact by securing two blue chip recruits from the Midstate. Tyler Smith of Giles County had to be re-recruited after signing a letter of intent with the Vols under Buzz Peterson. Pearl’s goal was to couple that with the signing of Jamont Gordon, a former Glencliff star who finished the season at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

Two months later, Pearl has made big waves in recruiting, but not the ones that anyone expected. Neither Smith nor Gordon will play in Knoxville this fall, and the ensuing scramble for players has prompted the Vols coach to resort to tactics that are legal, but in many minds unethical.

The series of moves, which have left Smith sitting out, Matthew Dotson of Hickman County released, and Ryan Childress coming over from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, have many UT fans perplexed.

It started with the failed attempt to build a relationship with Smith, who led Giles County to a state championship as a sophomore. Pearl eventually kept Smith on scholarship despite Smith’s desire to be released, and as a result Smith will sit out two years while Pearl eats an unused scholarship.

The message sent: You sign with a school and not a coach.

The Vol coach then turned around and signed Childress after he was released from his scholarship at Pearl’s previous school, Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Pearl had recruited Childress in the same manor that Peterson had Smith.

With that backdrop, Pearl hatched a heartless plan to rid himself of Dotson, whom he felt could not play at the SEC level. After stating that he would honor all the scholarships awarded by Peterson, Pearl sent several obvious signals that he had no desire to see Dotson in Orange. He had virtually no contact with Dotson until late May, when Dotson visited campus to make preparations to enter summer school. He registered for classes, played pickup with the players and met the coaches.

Less than a week later, the Hickman County star was told via cell phone by Pearl not to attend summer school, one day before class was to start. All of the other incoming Vol freshmen are enrolled in the current session.

Pearl proceeded to tell Dotson that he would never play in front of Childress, who has played exactly the same amount of college games as Dotson — zero. Dotson could no longer ignore the signs, and was left with no choice but to ask for his release.

His release coincided with the news that Dameon Mason, a transfer from Marquette who averaged 11.9 points per game last year, made an unofficial visit to Knoxville last weekend. So to clear a scholarship for the possibility of Mason, Pearl orchestrated the release of a player who desperately wanted to be a Vol instead of releasing Smith, who has no desire to play for him.

The message sent: We will do what we must do to win, no matter what.

All of Pearl’s actions are legal. He can look everyone in the eye and say he honored the scholarship offer. But there was no honor in what he did to Dotson

In the small community of Centerville, Dotson is the pride of the town. It was a huge story there that a kid from the local high school, ranked third in his class, would be playing for the Vols next year. One day before he was to embark on his college journey, the town hero had to tell everyone that the coach didn’t want him. Dotson is left to scramble to find a place to play, and he will. Hopefully the experience will make him stronger.

As for Pearl, maybe he is right that Dotson simply was not good enough to play at UT. We will never know, but there are tons of examples of lower level recruits who blossom into excellent college players.

The big picture is the first impression Pearl has left on the coaching fraternity, both high school and college, and the UT fans. After what has transpired, can anyone blame Tyler Smith now for saying he felt uncomfortable with the new coaching staff back in early April?

I agree in that I don't think what he did to Dotson was right. If he wanted to release this kid, he should have done it the minute he got here... not now.

I also agree to some extent, but none of know what really happened with Dotson. There is always more to the story that we never hear about.

That was just a lose-lose situation. There was nothing he could have done to get out of that situation in a positive manner. If he would have realeased him as soon as he got the job he would have taken a ton of heat for it. If he would have let him play at UTK he would have never seen the floor and it would have been a bad situation for UTK AND the kid. Dotson would be in a much better situation going somewhere he is able to contribute.

I tend to think this guy hit it pretty straight on. I mean the way he has handled Smith... there may be more to that story but he did it to Thomas and now he really did Dotson wrong. It's not like Dotson is beating them off with a stick.

I'd say the article has it pretty much the way it went down, imo.

Interesting article. I'm hoping this was a set of misjudgements coming into a new situation and not a philosophy or approach that will be repeated.

What will happen if this is his style but he's very successful? :question:

Yeah, probably. It was harsh to let him go the day before he planned to move here, but better late than never I guess. Do you think that it would have been any better to bring him here, lead him on and never play him or do this? It's kind of a catch 22 I guess..

The kid had to know he probably wouldn't play a whole lot but he might have worked his but off and earned some PT..... it's not like this Childress kid is all world. Like he said.... at least Dotson was an in state kid who probably grew up wanting to be a Vol.

Well like I said, I don't agree with how Pearl handled that, but what's done is done I guess..I hope someone else takes Dotson this late..

I wonder if Belmont held a scholly for him. :lol:

The kid will probably turn out to be an All American somewhere with our luck in basketball.

Now THAT wouldn't surprise me a bit. He will probably hit a game winning shot while playing against us too..

Stories aren't investigated anymore -- they are repeated.

this can be very good or it can almost completely destroy what respect our b-ball team has left.

2345 the article pretty much sums it up. It's just rehashing some of Pearl's player decisions since he got here. This was all set off since he has released Dotson from his LOI.

Is that all. Man are we trippin over stupid stuff like that. If he doesnt feel he will be able to help the team, then you have to let him go. Yes I think he handled it totally wrong, but I trust Pearl to turn everything around with our team. hey at least he will be able to go to another team and get playing time. hey at least Pearl speaks the truth and told him he wouldn't start ahead of him.

Former West Aurora and Marquette star Dameon Mason is transferring to Louisiana State University. Mason, loved the campus, and staff on his visit, and is now set to attend the Southeastern Conference school.

Mason, a 6-5 wing, is a big time athlete. As a high school senior, he was runner-up to Shannon Brown for Illinois Mr. Basketball, and ranked among the Top 75 basketball prospects in the United States.

Mason chose LSU over the University of Illinois, and the University of Tennessee.

w/ how things have been handled i'm thinking he's bitten off more than he could chew. whether it's ego or something different he's been definitely keeping things interesting. its unfortunate he's going through so much animosity so early b/c he had a pretty smooth ride here.

Pearl did NOT run off Thomas. Thomas' mom was supposed to come to see the school and she never did. Thats what happened with that situation so instead of Pearl waiting for her to get the chit done, he went ahead and inked Childress.

1. Dotson's father initated a discussion with Pearl on how his son would be used and Pearl was honest with him. Then it was the Dotson's who asked for a release, Pearl was more than willing to honor the Scholarship. Pearl is not to blame for this at all, he was honest in his assessment of Dotson not fitting his system.
Did you know that Dotson played a pick up game with the vets and couldn't hold his own.

Pearl is the best hire for this basketball program since Ray Mears.

I just don't see the point in critiqing these early moves by Bruce Pearl. This is his team now, and I would expect him to set his house in order the way he sees fit. Given the past performance of the Basketball program, he's not likely to make it worse. I'm gonna give Pearl a lot of lattitude here. It's time to win some ballgames, and I'm betting this guy's gonna make it happen. Just give him time!

Now, could we please play some football? I'm sooo tired of waiting!

People just need to chill. Buzz ran off a few players that were already on the team when he came to town. At least Pearl is cutting them loose before they ever get to campus thus letting them play right away somewhere else. Whenever a new coach is comes in his first year, he's got to make it his team. And I've got no problem if Dotson can't cut it in the SEC, then he should not have been recruited by Buzz anyway. Probably one the reasons that Buzz is gone is that his blue-chip prospects signed with Auburn and he was left to fill roster spots with non-SEC talent. Sure he's a Tennessee kid, but the Vols need talent.... not a sentimental pick right now.

Regarding Smith, he already said before Buzz was fired that he would reconsider if Buzz wasn't there. I'm not surprised that he would not honor his committment to Tennessee. The thing about Smith is that he's a star... me-my-mine.... and Pearl's style of coaching is team oriented.

All this stuff will work itself out once the Vols start winning on the basketball court.
