We'd never get to use it these days. The NCAA has effectively rendered the kickoff return obsolete. Might as well just start every series at the 25 and only use kickers for FG/extra points. I'm guessing the punter will also go the way of the dodo bird. Just march off 35 yards on each 4th down and let teams start the next series there. Why waste time having players run a sprint on the kickoff when it's either out of the endzone or a fair catch? Kinda silly if you ask me.

like anything in sports. because of chance.

why run up the middle for 2 yards and a cloud of dust? cause you might break one.
why take long shots down field, one of the statistically least likely plays to succeed? because it might work.
muffed kicks, fumbles, seams in protection. it can all change the game.
