Privacy Lost: Does anybody care? - Privacy Lost - MSNBC.com

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail, rummage through your instant messages without your permission or scan the Web sites you’ve visited — maybe even find out that you read this story.
You might be spied in a lingerie store by a secret camera or traced using a computer chip in your car, your clothes or your skin.

There was an old Nova special called "We Know Where You Live" that was done in the late 80's/early 90's.

It was pretty revealing then and this was pre-email, pre-Internet, pre-CRM databases, etc.

As was discussed back in the NSA threads, corporations probably know a lot more about all of us than the government does.

You speak of corporations knowing every thing about us..........I hate it when you give them minor information and then they start rolling off every thing about your life.

It bothers me when I call Pizza Hut to order a pizza and they can look up what I ordered last time. I feel like saying "Look...you and I both know that I shouldn't be eating your heart attack inducing, fat infested pizza. Could you please just let me order in peace without rubbing in the fact that I also ordered pizza 10 days ago!?"

Yeah, yesterday I went to Walmart to get an oil change because my usual place is not open on the weekends.

They took my information and now it is on their computer system.

Kinda scary!

If you want to have a good time, go buy something at Radio Shack and when the 18 year old clerk asks you for your phone number, give them a 6 digit number and tell them that's just the way they do it back home in Canada.

GM sells that OnStar to people with the idea of how great it is to have help anytime you need it. That thing is all about invasion of privacy. They know where you are, how fast you are going and all types of other data. There is no way I would buy an automobile with that type of sytem on it.

I think OE has seen a taste of what I can get on someone. What he ventured into on his family member is a slight dabble in what all is available. The dilemma out there is what is public knowledge and what is private. You'd be surprised what is public knowledge...or better definition publicly available info.
