Projected starting lineup for Michigan State

1. It’s a scrimmage with (likely) two starters out.
2. It’s not about who starts games, it’s who finishes them.

Hope the Vols play hard and learn a ton about themselves. Great opportunity for the newcomers and younger guys to get incredible experience out of the gate. Really looking forward to this team!

Looks like a lot of the posters were off on their projections!!

Dillione has a ways to go. Gainey is the real deal.

Who will the real MVP be, Knecht or Vescovi this year? A great problem to have.

We are going to have some problems under the basket. Awaka and Aidoo need to
continue to develop.

It’s just a projection but would be quite an interesting starting 5 if true. Guess it says a lot about what they think of Gainey getting the start at PG over Dillione.

The start for Gainey seemed well deserved, I think Dillione will be just fine but you could tell that he was a freshman in that game. With experience as the year goes on Dillione will be a good player for us as you could see the flashes in the game last night

Once Vescovi and Ziegler are back, do you think both start and Gainey/Shak run the bench unit? I kinda like the Gainey shak pairing. They have complementary skill sets

Yes. Vescovi is 100% starting. And I know some will say that ZZ prefers to come off the bench, but when he is fully healthy, whenever Barnes decides that point is, he’ll be the starter. Might not be Game 1. They might ease him into it. But by conference play both ZZ and Vescovi are starters.

Yeah I think this year that’s almost a given. I think we’ll see the main 5 being Vescovi, ZZ, Knecht, JJJ, and Aidoo once the rotation takes shape. Then you have Gainey, Mashack, Awaka, Dillione, and Estrella as the next 5 off the bench IMO. I’m not too informed on how good Cade Phillips is but I’m guessing him and Carr will be the youngsters that will be in the development stage this year.

Yeah, tough environment for a freshman to make their debut and hope they look like an All-American. The truth is we may never see Gainey play like that, again, and we may never see Dilione struggle like that again. I'd say the expectation for both of those guys is somewhere in between.

We needed ZZ in that game much more than Santi...as good as Mashack is defensively he is playing out of position and struggled to stay in front of State's PG

But that is the issue with Mashack at this point. He is a great defender. Plays with tremendous energy. Team first player. But he is playing "out of position" no matter what position you play him at on offense. He is not a shooting guard. He is not a post. I guess he is a slashing SF type player offensively. He is at least a little better suited there. But Knecht needs a majority of the minutes occupying that spot on offense.

Mashack is out of position, but it is more beneficial for the team to have him at point than on the wing. When Maschack is at the point you have SV, Knecht, Gainey, or Dillone on the wing running off screens. As long as Mashack isn’t turning the ball over, it’s better to have him bring the ball up. There is no need for the other guys to be wasting energy bringing the ball up. Further, having Mashack at the point opens up the court. Teams have to guard him bringing the ball up, so they can’t cheat off of him. If he’s on the wing they would cheat off of him and clog things up.

Agree...it is going to be interesting to see where and how he gets his minutes. He stepped up when ZZ went down and showed some real nice flashes in his mid-range and slashing to the rim - we really need him to improve on that this season but he has struggled a bit so far in our exhibition games imo (other than the spot-up corner 3's he hit which were very nice). He can be such a spark for us coming off the bench and be a legit SEC 6th man contender if he can be an offensive threat and raise his ppg to 8+
