PTI on Tennessee...

Sports reporters know our history and tradition. You'd think coaches would too. I'd almost think the guys we've gone after are too scared to risk their careers. They either go down as legendary here or as complete failures everywhere. I'd risk it for legend status, but that's just me.

We don't have a tradition of loving our coach too much now do we? The only one who didn't get shamefully fired was the one smart enough to RUN.

TN job is a pressure cooker w/ high expectations. Not every coach has the ego for the SEC. This is the BIG LEAGUES and you either come w/ the ego or for the payday in 3-4 years when you are shown the door.
Hart should've hired a search firm but there is no shame in being turned down by coaches. This isn't a job for the faint of heart.

Hart dragging this search out is hurting our chances at the best coordinators. Auburn is already filling their positions and we are back at square one.

Its all about the risk/reward ratio. If you're C Stong and earning $2.5m, does coming to UT sound enticing? No. He could win 8+ games a year with his current UL machine in place. With some breaks and no injuries, could win 10+ and end up in a BCS and be the toast of the town. Huge pay / moderate stress.

Now let him consider UT....

$750,000ish more money a year (yawn..); have to play Ala, UF, USCe, GA every year and LSU, Arky aTm, Auburn on a rotating basis. Whoa!

At UT, he'll be 50/50 in year 1 or more probable year 2. In year 4 he may win 9+ games but he'll have to endure the UT knucklehead fan base for 4 years until then. High stress.

So, he considers his reward against his risk/stress and decides to stay where he is. I'm afraid this scenario has played out more than in a few HC minds. This will mean we'll have to drop down to a mid-major HC (i.e. Dooley) or a major level OC/DC. Then the reward (3x their current pay) is worth the risk.

Let us not forget that these guys are first business men....and then coaches.

Its come to the point now these frigin college coaches are going to make more than the pros. Any school now that has a decent coach will pay whatever to keep them if their winning. Tenn is hurting now because of hiring an unproven coach. Tenn will have to really open the chechbook now to get out of this mess. Better hire a proven coach this time around this hire could be detrimental. No time to grab straws.

What people didn't catch is cornheiser asked if job open for fball or bball since no one seems to be coaching bball with us scoring in 30's last two games. Didn't even know who UTs bball coach name! That is BAD FOLKS

Not denying any of the points made in this thread. They are true. Tennessee is a high pressure job.

But if other coaches don't want this job because they are afraid for their careers, then quite frankly they aren't good enough for the job anyway. That includes Strong, Gundy, and anyone else who turned us down (including Gruden, but in this case he's the exception because I don't believe that was why he turned us down).

The job is a CHALLENGE. We want a coach who is willing to EMBRACE such a great challenge. If Strong wants to stay with Louisville in the cream puff ACC and win 8 games simply by showing up, he can be my guest. But coaches should EMBRACE the challenge of playing Georgia, Florida, and Bama every year.

That's why I'll get behind whoever we hire. I'll know that, whoever it is, he is confident in himself and is embracing the amazing pressure and rigors of this job.

Just get back Dooley for one more year, we can save 5 Million $... Unless it is a splash hire and Jones wont do it!

ever think the second rate coaches are doing it for the money? Just no downside for them only Tennessee. If you are Jones and get a million or more raise what the hell you got to lose?

What job in the SEC isn't high pressure? I thought Hart was the real deal but alas he goofed this up...BAD. Might as well have kept Dooley and saved up money for a warchest to get a real coach in 2-3 years. However I agree, I will support him.

On a side note I hope that Strong comes to town and we destroy his redbirds. He just missed the opportunity of a lifetime not a few years after *****ing that he wasn't getting HC offers based on race.
