In my opinion, there are two viable options in which education in America can be improved:

1. Get rid of public education.

2. Keep public education and give the educators complete control over the students' environment. Yes, public schools should be boarding schools.
a. Private schools can still choose to be day-schools.
b. School vouchers should be offered for those who would rather send their child to private schools.

I really have no clue how to fix our education system.

I saw some statistic (don't know how factual) that showed us in a comparative chart with a group of the top 30 developed countries - we ranked like 25th in testing...but 1st in confidence of results.

Made me lol.

Control the environment. Remove the distractions.

If someone chooses to have their child educated by the state, then the state should have free reign over controlling said education.

If my taxes are paying for someone else to be educated, they better damn well come out of said schooling as a highly educated individual. Not someone who just flowed through the system without ever cracking a book.

Govt should have complete control of our children

I'll agree here - though our system often makes it extremely difficult for any good teacher to find a stable environment to teach. I have friends who have chosen another career path because of how unstable teaching life is.

better use of vocational schools instead of making sure every kid has a HS "diploma"

Eliminate Dept. of Education saving the taxpayers billions.

All education should be privatized. No more teacher's unions and superintendents with $1mill salaries.

The current public school system of the City of Memphis has a $1billion budget. A freakin' billion dollars. The current budget is larger than the entire CITY OF MEMPHIS.

The superintendent has an entourage, limo service, makes about $250,000 a year and runs a school system that is a dump with no one graduating.

It's an absolute joke. I live in a city that is the epitome of what liberals will turn your school system into. It's a welfare state that has nothing to do with education but is more about rewarding administration and union teachers with fat salaries and perks. When school transfers are available on a certain date, parents wait in line starting the day before, camped out, just to get on a waiting list to be able to send their child to a different school.

Parents are willing to lie and use false address information to accomplish this as well. The schools have had to crack down.

Can't say I agree with the NY Times article. They try imply that because 96% of the teachers are unionized this has something to do with it.

I didn't lie about anything but my parents made sure to send me to a school other than the one in my district. There are loopholes everywhere without lying

Most schools today are teaching in an archaic fashion that does not promote interaction and learning. We help sponsor the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta and they are doing tremendous things based upon a relatively simple premise... teach kids the way they want to learn (i.e. how they can best relate to the subject matter). He has 1000's of teachers visit his small school in Atlanta every year to learn how they are achieving such success, has been featured on Oprah and other shows, and has also had a movie made about him.

Obviously, we need to destroy the stigma that's tagged along with being a geek or a nerd. Anti-intillectualism is spreading like wildfire in the this country.

I told my brother to read "Old Man and the Sea"; I told him it was an easy read and was only 127 pages. He told me to just summarize it for him before he started up a conversation re: his latest video game. Good times...
