I do not see how the Board of Trustees in Good Consciousness could consider giving Dave Hart an open checkbook in this situation. UT is 4 Million dollars in the hole now. UT Athletics has nothing except a 200 million dollar note it is paying on for the "Facility Upgrades" Hamilton was so proud of. Now there's 10 more million down the drain firing Dooley plus Dave Hart's supposed open checkbook to hire new coaches with.

Don't misunderstand me, I didn't like Derek Dooley as a coach. I don't think he should have been hired to start with. That said, I'm also glad I'm not paying taxes in Tennessee or paying tuition for a child at the school. It could amount to something like $600 per student for football coaches and not education. Yes, football is important, but preparing young men and women for a career is more important imo.

When our athletics are doing good I assume they donate money to some academics. Could be wrong though.

The athletic department is in the red--as most major college athletic departments are--partly because of the insane nature of football and the facilities arms race, which means everyone has to keep spending tens of millions to upgrade. The other reason is that our football program has suxed for years, which has resulted in lower ticket sales, lower season ticket sales, lower concessions--and lower contributions to the AD. Winning will cure all that--but you have to have a great coach to win. Bottom line: Don't stint on the coach's salary because money is tight; you've got to make a strong investment to win.

I don't agree with the article stating that Hart always knew that Dooley wasn't the answer. On the contrary, I think Hart really wanted Dooley to be answer and gave him ample opportunity to prove it. Otherwise I think Hart would've fired Dooley after the Kentucky game last year.

I know it seem unconscionable to see this type of money being spent on sports at a university, but what you are not considering and the economic benefit the football team brings to the university. it's not a drain, it's a hugh benefactor. It's sucessfull enough to fund itself, viturally every other varsity sport which is perpetually in the red, and many other non-sports related endevors. So, would you rather pay your football coaches 3 million a year total and make 110 million dollars, or pay your coaches 8 million and make 200 million? And, it's important to point out - this is not a tax on the citizens of the state, it's money given happily by an excited fan base.........It's just the way it is.
